Killing pirates and freeing slaves

I'm currently having a bit of trouble with a mission from Roden 4 for the Gallente where I am supposed to kill some pirates and then free the slaves. Well, I warped in and realized I was vastly out numbered. I managed to pick off a few ships, warp out, repair, warp in, kill a few more, rinse, repeat. But the last ship, the pirate slave ship is rocking me something fierce before I can even get in range of him (My shields and armor are half down at 15k even with a repairer and shield booster going).

I'm in a Catalyst with 5 hybrid turrets (mix of 75 and light electron) which I'll be swapping out for 5x125mm or 150mm depending on price. I haven't looked at the 250mm yet as I assumed they'd be expensive and I haven't trained medium turrets yet, but if they're under 100k then it shouldn't be a problem to use those. I'm also swapping out my Antimatter charges for Iron charges since I understand they add to my range.

But is there anything else I should be looking at to increase the range of pew pew, short of training up and purchasing 425mm's?

Bolded your main issue. Pick one type of tank, armor or shields, and do that well, rather than trying to do both halfway.

Also, pick one type of weapons system and stick with it, don't just toss random guns on there.

lol, yeah the guns I have are basically all the ones I have been given from the starting missions, I haven't actually had to buy any myself, so that's why they are what they are...

So instead of using a shield boost and armor repair , I should try using two shield boosts or two armor repairs instead of one of each?

Hmm, you gave me an idea, I have a high slot remote armor repairer I picked up from...somewhere...and could get three armors going because of it.

Thanks

Yes, you should either shield or armor tank a ship, not both. Also try using 1 rep/boost with some resistances. Find out who's going to be shooting you and what damage type they use so you can match those with your resists. That should give you a much more stable tank.

Edit: Also as below, you can't RR yourself, or use rep drones on yourself.

No, you couldn't. Since you can't remote-repair yourself (it wouldn't really be remote-repping otherwise, would it?)

And you might be better off with armour hardeners or reactive plating (to reduce incoming damage) and one armour repairer. Two will probably chew through your capacitor pretty quickly, and leave you just as poorly off as before. Look to see which of the four damage types the enemy ship is dealing out, and fit hardeners accordingly. You should probably be able to find some more detailed info on the damage types for your particular mission here.

I would say you're better off fitting;

As many rails as possible, same size, same ammo.

If i remember correctly, the slave ship stays out quite far in range, so you may need to fit an Afterburner to close the gap quickly.

I ran the mission with a Tristan using 75mm Rails/Thorium and an Afterburner, closed the gap in a few seconds and the slaver ship couldn't hit me as i was orbiting too close and too fast for it's guns to track/hit. And i could safely pop at it.

If you're planning on staying with Gallente, get your armour skills up, buy a Adaptive Nano Membrane.
Catalysts are pretty poor ships, especially when you're noob.

Ah ok, I have Tristan as well, which I actually like flying more than the Catalyst, though the Cat has all the high slots so I could equip 2 tracts and 2 salv on it in addition to 4 weapons (my goal anyway, not there yet). But thinking on what you said, maybe it's best if I just stick with the Tristan for combat missions since it's fast and has missiles, and make the Cat a pure salvage vessel with a 4 Salv / 4 Trac type setup?

Thanks :)

Edit: Also I am liking Gallante so I think I'll stay that way for now since I'm also trying to get my rep up with them to join the Militia.

Destroyers are good starting salv ships, simply becase as you point out, its got tons of highs. They're also good at shooting frigates. That's about all they're good for. I'd honestly start working up for a cruiser (thorax if you prefer turrets over drones) and start getting ready for lvl 2s. Once you get a solid fit, 1s are cake.

Destroyers generally are only good for salvaging and ganking.. They are very difficult to tank, so using a frig then cruiser should be your PvE route. Standard destroyer fit for salvaging will be 4 tractor, 4 salvages, mwd and some cargo expanders. Salvage rigs will help salvge quicker, but generally only for bigger salvageable ships.

If you have drone skills, get a vexor and start training for T2 Active hardeners ( Hull upgrades 4 I think it is ). Buy a set of N-Types for now, and check which damage types you need to resist in each mission. Damage control on cruisers, or Adaptive platings on frigates.

Destroyers have a huge signature radius making them way to easy to hit. You would be better off with an Incursus ( Blaster Frig ) or Vexor. Thorax is ok, but you need to have sorted out your tanking skills because you have to get in close to actually do any damage, where as drone boats can kite all day.

Ask in CAS Corp for help, there are many of us veterans still hanging about willing to help so long as you listen.

Thanks all. I ended up using 5x150mm rails with iron and an afterburner. I took out the ship's shield before closing the gap and at an orbit of 1k the slave ship apparently can't hit me so I regened my shields to full and armor as well, but I couldn't do enough damage to it's armor as it repaired too quickly so I left and came back with antimatter charges and annihilated the slave ship.

Thank you all very very much!
