IT'S OVER!
Join the channel "kodaplex" if you are participating!

From here on in "The Shuttle" refers to the prize shuttle containing the PLEX, and "The System" refers to the system that The Shuttle is located in.

Clue #1, 1:00am ST- In terms of jumps required, the closest trade hub to The System is Dodixie, then Rens, then Jita, then Amarr (7, 13, 15 and 16 jumps respectively)

Clue #2, 1:30am ST- The Shuttle is next to something very hot, but it's not a star (it was next to a lava-type planet)

Clue #3, 2:00AM ST- The System contains 4 times more stations than stargates, and over 5 times more moons than stations (1 stargate, 4 stations, 22 moons)

Clue #4, 2:20am ST- Starting from The System, you would need to make at least 2 jumps to reach low sec, and more than 10 to reach null sec

2:37am ST- The Shuttle is found! Congratulations Kirail!

Clue #5, 2:40am ST (unused)- The System is a navigational dead-end (only one stargate)

Clue #6, 3:00am ST (unused)- The System is in Everyshore

The Shuttle was in Colcer

---- ORIGINAL POST FOLLOWS ----

Today marks the end of my first year in EVE and thus Koda's first birthday. Hooray! As a bit of a celebration I'm going to run a little event that I thought of a while back but never got around to doing.

WHAT IS THE EVENT?

On Saturday the 23rd of June at 1am server time I'm going to undock in a shuttle somewhere in high sec, fly to a celestial and then eject. The shuttle will contain a couple of PLEX. I will post an initial clue as to the whereabouts of the shuttle in this thread, and then subsequent clues in a chat channel created for the event (see FAQ entry) at increasing frequency until someone finds it (maximum event time is 2hrs). Just in case it isn't obvious, whoever finds the shuttle first gets to keep the PLEX (and the shuttle too I suppose).

FAQ

Q. Who is this event open to?
A. Everyone!

Q. Do I need to have trained certain skills to be in with a chance?
A. No. Shuttles have no skill requirements to fly, and it will be sitting at a celestial so you won't need to use scan probes. Being able to fly a fast ship will be helpful, though.

Q. Is there an entry fee?
A. No, participation is completely free.

Q. How will the clues work? Do I need to be some kind of cryptic puzzle genius?
A. The clues will likely not be cryptic or require you to trawl the web for answers, the only resource that will help you is EVE. For example, the first clue will likely be something along the lines of "the shuttle is in a system with more than 5 planets". Basically you will not have to guess whether you are on the right path or not, it will be more like a multiple choice system where each clue rules out a number of possibilities.

The initial clue will be posted as an edit to this post, and then clues will be posted with increasing frequency in the in-game chat channel "kodaplex". I will also edit this post with each subsequent clue, but they will be posted in the chat channel first.

Q. What if nobody finds it?
A. I've created a schedule for the releasing of clues. After 2hrs have passed all clues will have been given and the shuttle's location will be obvious.

Q. How do I know your friends/corpmates won't take it?
A. They don't know I'm running it (unless they read this), and the pilot watching the shuttle will be a new character with an unrelated name anyway. Nobody will have an advantage or be able to cheat.

Q. How I do know this isn't a trap for you to blow up my ship and/or pod?
A. Firstly, it will be in high sec. Secondly, the new character hasn't even been made yet so it won't be capable of killing anything of value. However, given the high value of PLEX it would be wise to move your spoils quickly lest other pilots try to blow up your new shuttle.

Q. How will I know if the event finishes?
A. I'd advise anyone wishing to participate to join the chat channel "kodaplex", as all clues & event updates will be posted there first. If people want to use it for intelligence with other pilots then they're welcome to do so as well. Keep in mind that I am running this event by myself so ignore any other pilots who claim the event is over.

Q. Is this legal to do?
A. Yes. PLEX is treated no differently to any other in-game item once it has been redeemed.

Q. 1am server time? WTF?
A. This equates to peak time Friday evening in the US and Saturday morning where I am (Australia). Sorry Europe!

Please post any questions you have that aren't covered above!

Hooray! I thought I had posted in invisible ink or something for a while there.

If anyone else DOES plan to participate, please post here so I know about it! Won't be any fun if nobody gets involved.

Got a bunch of clues prepared, all of which only require EVE (admittedly the map mostly). Still need more people though! Some Jita advertising may be in order I think.

I've made a few changes to the original post, but to save you all re-reading it I've basically decided that the event will be limited to two hours. At 3AM EVE time the final clue will be given and the location of the shuttle should be obvious, provided you keep the previous clues in mind. That means I'm not going to announce the name of the system anymore if nobody finds it, as this way there's more incentive to partake in the whole event instead of coming in at the last second and getting lucky.

All clues are based on information I got from EVE, no 3rd party resources were used or will be required. You're free to use such resources anyway as it's unlikely to give any unfair advantage.

Lastly, if anyone wants to donate ISK to help fund this I will happily accept your generosity Blink

A quick bump and a further edit to the OP for layout. We're kicking off in 20mins! I will edit the OP with each clue and also bump the thread.

That was a seriously tense hour and a half. Madly chasing around godknows how many systems....

I think my scan button is traumatized.

Thanks again Koda
10/10 would race again :p

Was quite an exciting hunt. Even though I didn't win it was time well spent and totally worth it.

I might do the same thing in a few months for laughs and giggles.

Thanks.

A well-earned congratulations to Kirail, who is now roughly 1bn ISK richer! Big smile The other participants were very close, some only a few jumps away.

Just for fun, here is the Wall of Oblivious Pilots - those who were in the system at some point during the event (many in scan range) and were completely unawares that all that ISK was just sitting there!

Allen O'doul
Rick McCloud
Rikson Lyne
decar'giran nam
Andy Camp
Alice Eve
Ser'kele
(+ a couple more who were there before I started tracking names)

Thanks to the few who participated, it was fun :) I've added some "answers" to the clues in the OP for anyone interested.

Great event! Nice diversion from the usual.

I got too focused on the market hubs, and thus stuck too close to shipping lanes between Dodoxie and Rens, and to my frustration kept drifting too close to Amarr space while trying to balance between Rens and Jita. When it all came out, I was about 8 jumps away, but wasn't even looking in the area of the right system.

Players need to host more events like this!

My only complaint is that about half to two-thirds of the way through the event, when you dropped one of the clues you called out Kirail by name. To me it seemed like a wink and a nudge that she was close. Not to take away from her victory -- obviously she was quite a bit closer than anyone else -- but it still feels like that put the rest of the players at a disadvantage.

Excellent challenge! Thank you for hosting. If you do something like this again in the future, I'll be excited to partake. Congrats to Kirail. Use the ISK wisely! Blink

BTW: If you do indeed host something like this again, can you maybe send tonight's participants an Evemail? Big smile

Oh I had no idea where any of you were, I only said it was for her because she mentioned accidentally going into low sec. Blink Was just me making a joke in light of that.

I certainly cannot rule out doing it again in the future, I had fun too :D It was tense watching many random pilots get so close to the shuttle without realising what was inside.

I didn't actually use clue 4 or any info to do with the position relative to low/nullsec, because by that time my list of systems with 1 stargate / 4 stations, 2 stargates / 8 stations was growing pretty thin. I pretty much just started off in a system between doxdie/rens that filled the critera (Deltole I think) and then branched out in a spiral. Once I'd gone 4-5 systems I checked using "set destination" to the new system and then waypointing the hubs one by one to check jumps.

By the time I saw Colcer and realised there was a very good chance of it being the right one, I was about 10 jumps away, following some random trail Big smile

Indeed, the star map is incredibly useful! There's an awful lot of information it can show you and/or filter out. I thought that being able to see the colour of the star in each system was cool and I was going to use that as a clue, but the shades used on the map are too similar to really tell them apart.
