here are some major differences between wow, being an eve player that still has no disrespect for wow,(just much of the playerbase)

1. in wow you can max out your character in a matter of days, in eve there is no such thing as a maxed out character.
2. save for getting your guild together to camp the other factions AH for a bit, you can't own any part of wow. in eve your corporation can hold large swaths of the universe, if you so choose and are successful.
3. getting ganked in wow is a ghost walk from the graveyard, in eve you can lose billions of isk and even skillpoints.
4. wow has dozens of dead servers, eve only has 1 server for the entire world (except the test server) which gives the game a unique sense of diversity.
5. i have yet to play any game in the same league of wow or eve that lets you pay the subscription fee WITH IN GAME CURRENCY... this in itself makes both the game currency feel like real money and also makes the losses hurt a lot more...

And here I thought that all EVE players are 1: Smartest People EVA 2: All Mature Cool

The Player base of EVE is 1,000 times worse than WoW's, but thats the nature of the game, Space Capitalism the MMO. When your make a game around screwing other people then thats what your going to get.Lol

so what your saying is a game kind of based on real life i take it. eve is were people can and do act like the jerks they wish they could be in the real world were other game dont let you contral how the game flows.
Take Goons " ya ya i know boo goons" hang with me i have a point to make. in what game can a group of people "like goons" pretty much **** off half the people playing and effect there game play in ways they have not thought about?
eve is so diffent from WOW,GuildWars or any other mmo's out there it to much to list how its diffent.

But i think that what sets it apart from any other game. you never know was on the other side of the jump gate.

Technically not true.

There are a little over 380 skills currently, which would take a little over 26 years without implants to have.

So EVE does have the capability of having and maxed out character. It just takes a long time.

And thats assuming they dont add any more in the time it takes to train the existing ones.

Thats another thing i find fascinating about eve - how much its evolved over time. Not just changes to item balance but whole new classes of items, new space with totally different gameplay and a whole host of other things.

If you can, track down some of the older players and ask about what eve was like in the early days, you might be surprised how different it was.

Haven't played WoW, but I played EQ2 since it started until this January and I guess WoW and EQ2 are quite similar in a lot of aspects.

The major difference I notice is that in EVE you have much more players that influence you - in EQ2 I pretty much only cared about the people in my guild, we raided in instances without caring about what other raid-guilds do, so except that I bought stuff from non-guildies now and then I didn't really had any contact with other players on my server.

In EVE you will get influenced by A LOT more players - they will destroy your ship, they will buy stuff from you or sell stuff to you, they will scam you, they will declare war on your corporation etc., etc.

After the first year or so in EQ2 I stopped reading the server forums. In EVE I guess it's good to look at them on a regular basis to know what might influence you and your gameplay the next time.

Eve has consequences and thus it is also capable of generating value.
Eve has no over bearing guided story lines that dominate your path, you and those around you dominate your path.
Eve allows people to interact in hostile ways most games would never allow, creating a real sense of danger and thrills, while helping to generate real human relationships and dependencies.
Eve's stories are generated by eve's players not by the devs.
Eve elicites a more complete range of human emotion and therefore is a superior art form.

I did play Wow for many years... not bashing... just how I see it, and Wow was and is a really great game..
Eve at worst is really great art, at best Eve is an actual virtual world.

Once things click for you... you don't really play eve... you live it...

It's not that different except in the minds of people who want to think they are superior for liking Eve. Every group needs another group to hate, and Eve players love to hate WOW.

WoW = Level -> Gear -> Raid -> Gear -> Raid -> Expansion -> Level -> Gear -> Raid -> Gear -> ...
EvE = Time[Skill] -> Earn -> pewPEW -> PVE | PVP | Trade | Exploration | Manufacture -> pewPEW -> Earn -> Time[Skill] -> ...

One suggestion for someone new..

Don't think of EVE as a game, think of it as a playground. Unlike most MMO's, eve doesn't provide you with activities and things to do, you have to choose what you want to do and go make it fun yourself.

There's a few dozen different directions you can go in, for example (in no particular order)

Faction Warfare (Controlled pvp)
Alliance Warfare (Open PvP)
Mission Grinding (Questing)
Mining (just like farming herbs, ore in other games)
Manufacturing (kind of like other games professions)
etc etc

The events in WOW other theme MMO are scripted, in EVE and other sandbox mmo that dont happen. The players are the center and engine that drive all game events.

Mostly so - But not quite entirely.

CCP does set up opportunities to play something semi-specific, like Incursions or Faction Warfare. On the other hand, you're perfectly free to ignore those opportunities - without any direct or even secondary consequences. There may be tertiary consequences, like effects on the economy, but that's about it.

That said, this biggest differnce is in the lack of external authority & guidance. The basic parameters are set, you're give a brief guide, are shown some of the toys, and promptly sent out on your own. The GMs will only intervene in very limited and specific situations. Other players are free to swipe your toys, if they can - and you're free to kick sand in their faces, if you choose. If you want to go find an obscure corner and play hermit, you can. Or if you want to get right into the middle of the biggest riot you can find, that's fine too.

In WoW you kill things, level up, and grind for gear. The most fun to be had is at a "maximum character level". When you reach this goal, you grind for the epic loot and engage in PvP.

EVE game play isn't like this at all. Attaining "maximum level" is impossible. With the exception of ISK-making, the game does the grinding for you. When you log on and play the game, you actually "play" it. Sadly, many players are so accustomed to grinding that they just don't know what to do when they play EVE. instead, they aimlessly grind.

Some other differences include:
Perma-death and your stuff can be blown up (surviving and skilling up is more meaningful)
More complex player made economy, can make like 90% of all obtainable items
You can destroy or exploit almost every object in the game, at least in low sec

Eve is like learning poker. Frustrating, senseless, and hard at first, then you start to get it and the fun begins to multiply.

WOW is like going on different rides in an amusement park.

The question you have to ask yourself is do I like cooking food, or going out and having food served to me.

Cooking it yourself has mixed results and takes more time and work, but when you get it right the feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction far outweigh having it served. You also save money by doing it yourself (and unique to EVE, if your good enough you can make enough money to pay for the SUB saving yourself money there too :)

Eve rewards you proportionally to the amount of thought and attention to detail you give it.

The reason Wow classes all have cookie-cutter builds is because someone did the math...and the math problem was simple enough that they could arrive at a correct solution.

Eve is like Chess. Yes, there is probably a mathematical 'pefect' way to play the game but it is so complex with so many different goals and definitions of success that arriving at that is pretty much impossible.

Likewise, WOW fights are generally scripted. They are either against completely static foes (PVE content) or against players... but even against players the variety of fits and tactics is so widespread that you will always have to think about what you're doing in any given situation.

In Wow, being 'really good' is merely a case of how geared you are, and how closely you stick to the 'proper' way to handle an encounter as figured out by the elite players within the release of any new content.

EVE... the 'elite' players generally don't want to tell you the best way to do XYZ...They figured out something and are profiting from it. It is up to YOU, the player, to figure things out and find your own little advantage that you can leverage.

In the cat-and-mouse game that is low sec, there is no shame in learning to be a better mouse.

Hi fellow citizens of New Eden :)

I used to play WoW, that's really the only other MMO I've ever played.. well, except for a brief foray into the failsauce that was The Matrix Online. And then some Guild Wars whilst trying to kick my WoW addiction. I wonder, does DC Universe Online count as a legit MMO? Meh...

Anyway, I've have heard that this game isn't really like WoW or any other MMOs out there for that matter. I'm confused as to how it's so very different. Is it because it's in space? I mean there was a Star Trek MMO, right? You got to fly a spaceship, do quests and stuff. You got to walk around in your spaceship. There was a Star Wars MMO, right? Clearly it isn't space that really sets this game apart.

I don't really get what it is about EVE that makes it so vastly different from other MMOs. Maybe I'm not familiar enough with MMOs to understand the difference. Enlighten me?

eve has a player driven economy. most other mmos are about raid drops.
when you die in eve, there are consequences. other mmos, you just respawn.
you "lvl up" passively through acquiring skill points via time. other mmos you grind mob a and move on to mob b til you max lvl.
it takes forever to do anything in eve. most mmos, everything is instant.
eve is on a single shard so everyone plays together. most mmos are seperated into different shards.

Agree with this, EvE is more than a game, for me EvE is endeles field for study, even im bored somtime with EvE, EvE is more than a game, is like second part of my real life even its virtual... I dont play EvE i live inside EvE ;)

The most most biggest difference betwen EvE and other mmo is, EvE run on single serwer, whole hardware infrastructure need in total 75kw power supply, it deal with xx.000 playes playing simultaneously withaut lag.

Only in EvE you can met bunch of wired people like goons Blink
