5 light drones as frig defense

Hi,

I had some issues with frig defense when flying cruiser/BC sized ships without drone bonus lately. Shield thorax with medium ions for example...or a shield Harbinger. Assault frigs and some t1 frigs are quite strong now. I find it hard to shake off or kill such ships as soon they managed it under my guns. 5 light drones don't seem a real threat to them.

I consider to use ECM drones instead. But I don't like their unreliability. Web drones are stacking penalised and really thin. Neut drones are too weak as well...it just takes too long to cause any cap issues to a frig.

But still I read the Talos - for example - has an advantage (compared to the other tier3s) against frigs because of it's drones. What did I wrong?

Thanks for any hint.

How are your drone skills? 5 warrior II will give trouble to most frigates, and you have more donebay to carry spare drones or hornet ec-300.
Also having a scrambler and a web hepls a lot vs frigs.

Medium energy neutraliser will wreck frigs.

If you can't handle that fly with 5x Hammerheads or 5x Valkyries. If you are struggling with frigs on a thorax you really need to re-evaluate your gunnery/piloting skills.

The only ones that should trouble you are full blown interceptors, holding a point on you while moving at 4k+

The truth of it is that most frigs cant be cap stable with and MWD and a point, so force them to burn cap with drone pressure, and either kill them when tthe MWD goes off or warp off once the point goes down.

If they are <10k hammerheads will melt then in seconds anyway. It's like having a daredevil sit on them.

I have almost maximum drone skills. @scrambler: I was talking about ABing oder dual prop frigs. So granted, this is more or less the worst case which could happen.

I tried Hammerheads against a Retribution and Vengeance (AB fitted), orbitting me @<2-4km. My medium drones had a hard time hitting the frig. But yes, maybe I should consider a combination of neut, drones and web. AB is a major issue.

Consider Valkyrie II or Infiltrator II, they are faster than hammerheads. Light scout drones are nasty to frigates too. And if the frig orbit at close range and shoot your drones, you can scoop the one hurted in the drone bay to break the frigate lock on it and replenish its shield.

This is working as intended. To reliably be able to get rid of any frigate tackling you simply have to adapt your ship, which means you need small drones, at least one web and at least one neutralizer. If you feel this is too much gimping your setup then just stay away from enemy frigates.

Talos has an advantage because it has blaster tracking, a tracking bonus, can fit dual webs, and has drones. Yes it will eat frigates. A shield talos will still have trouble because any frig that isn't entirely paper thin can kill those drones.

Your problem is that you're flying a thorax with no web. Your best bet is to nail them on approach, but if they're close AND they have an afterburner, you'll have issues. Your best bet here is to use medium ECM drones which are very effective against frigates, and once they've stopped tackling you you need to get some distance and/or cut your transversal w/ some manual piloting. Medium blasters are good against frigs, but you still need a web. A vagabond deals with this by hitting frigates at long range, either as they approach or retreat. Once a frigate gets close to a vaga, it has to rely on a neut and its drones. Once the frigate drops tackle, the vaga can get some distance and nail it.

Don't get a Talos just for frigs... It's horrible at it. The tracking bonus is a joke, it's not going to make up for resolution difference of large guns on small hulls by a long shot. Get a cane, slap on some neuts. It's boring, but it works.
