Actual balance is impossible without making everything exactly the same. The best they, and every other game company, can do is minimize how drastic the FOTM becomes.

True balance is homogenous and makes for an incredibly boring game. Even the "rock paper scissors" style of balance is quite boring when you get right down to it.

Erm, *koff koff* ... Chess ...

It's the ultimate abtract goal of any game designer to achieve perfect balance, because that's precisely what gives a game longevity, because it assures the player that it's player skill ONLY that makes a difference in engagements.

With so many factors to balancein a game like an MMO it becomes impossible in practice, just an ideal to steer towards.

However, the impossibility of perfect balance in an MMO dovetails nicely with the "carrot on a stick" idea that there should always be a little bit of imbalance to keep people on their toes. So long as the "OP" race changes up now and then, it's ok.

Also, a little bit of imbalance is good because some people find playing a "weaker" race (or whatever) and making it work for them, to be a challenge.

Anyway, I'm now glad I stuck with T2 Hybrids all the way up to Large - of course I'll be gutted if we've misunderstood CCP and they're to be nerfed further into the ground for some reason Lol

This. You want balance? Fine. Everyone gets the same ship, prefitted with the same mods and just to be sure no one has an advantage, everyone has the exact same skill levels necessary to fly this ship. There ya go, now the game is balanced.

Balance is a lie. All it takes is one person making a creative fit that works well, and everyone copy catting that fit. Then the cry for nerf begins, a caterwaul of epic proportions that really do nothing to help the game, but rather satisfies the masses who don't want to have to think hard.

At any rate, some nerfs are deserved and some aren't. It's just become the easy path, it seems.

You people are confusing balance with parity. Balance is there are effective uses of the Zealot and Muninn, but the only effective use of an Eagle is to not fly it at all. Parity is where they all are the same.

Semantics. People want to be able to kill anything with anything they fly. They want ez mode, where the size of the ship dictates the outcome of victory, not the actual ship, skills, or fittings coming into play. By needing some things, you remove the initiative to come up with new strategies, fits, et al. Sure, some things were broken as they were OP and therefore needed to be nerfed, but sometimes its a matter of people perpetually upset that they couldn't kill something they thought they should be able to kill.

When the same guys who were responsible for balancing in the past are given the jobs then they will decide:

A. We hate Gallente anyway and nerfing is more fun
B. The Drake is an underpowered and underused ship. We should increase tank and DPS by 50%

....as if 10,058 Goon voices cried out and were suddenly silenced.

It's good that hybrids are finally getting balanced. Seeing gallente blaster boats shooting exhumers with impunity is proof that they are overpowered.

i guess you forgot about drones being one of the main gallente features? I guess buff hybrids, nerf drones eh? because of not gallente will be over powered eh.

Well the idea in starcraft is that every player ought to have an equal opportunity to win independant on which race they pick.

But when it comes to Eve I would guess that most of us dont want that every race have an equal ability to handle any given situation. Each race should excell in their own specific area. For example: Gallente should have the highest close ranged dps, amarr should have the meanest tanks etc etc. That's not imbalance, it's diversity.

Who said the game was unbalanced? -and why the hell would you fly something else any way?

if everyone had the same stuff no one could faceroll thier way to victory. The polar opposite is like having 1 ship that can solo everything with the press of 1 button - anyone who ever suffered world of warcraft should know just how lame as hell arcane mages were 111111111111111111. Theres no skill involved its mashing a button and getting paid.

Personally skill being the victory factor over unbalanced autowin ship/fitting sounds so much more exciting. But then it doesnt have to be delete all ships/fittings and inset a bland single ship instead. Just have the different races perform different roles (im only talking weapons not tanking types) railguns poor track long range hard hitting blasters fast track hard hitting terrible range and so forth
