Games Crashes My PC using Star Map

Hi, I signed up for a month a week or so ago and so far it is a massive learning curve.
However my problem is that when I use the star map it crashes my system. I'm not talking hit Ctrl Alt Del and close the program, I'm talking complete system freeze, restart the PC to get back control. It happens every time I use it, in station or in space.
I'm running the game on Windows 7 64, Core i7 Cpu, Radeon HD 7970, 16Gb 1600Mhz Ram, SSD drive, latest drivers on everything. I also tried it on Windows 8 preview release, same hardware same issue. I just paid the $40.00 with startup fee and it looks like I might have to eat it if I can't solve this problem. I realise I can play without the Map but it's there to be used and it is handy.
Anyone else having this issue, or at least have some idea on how to fix it? Thanks What?

Lots of problems with the Raedon HD 7970 card. If you have another video card try it out see if it fixes your issues.

Yeah thanks but I'm not gonna pull out a very expensive card for the sake of one game. I did reduce the clock speed though and so far so good. Hopefully it's under control, if not I'll use third party maps instead. Thanks anyway Lol
