I've recently gotten somewhat burned out on my normal diet of horror and fantasy books, so I was thinking I'd try some of the hard boiled stuff..

Any suggestions? Smile

You could start with the "classics", some of the Sherlock Holmes stories are quite good even if the language is a bit dated and Agatha Christie is worth a stab as well, as for more recent stuff I'm not very knowledgeable.

Pretty much this. I'd add Rex Stout and Ellery Queen to this list; both are absolutely amazing.

Speaking of more hard-boiled stuff, the first authors that spring to mind are, of course, Raymond Chandler and Dashiel Hammett. A lot of stuff James Hadley Chase is also pretty decent.

I'm not really very well familiar with the contemporary writers, except for Ian Rankin, who is just awesome.

It's not really hard-boiled, but the books by Steig Larsson are excellent. All three have been made into movies in Sweden, and Hollywood is releasing a version of the first late this year.

PVP is a question with no single right answer, but a lot of wrong ones.

the Holmes books have been mentioned. As have thre three Larsson ones.

I was never a fan of Christie because she always held an important clue back from the reader which somewhat spoiled it for me.

Being based in the UK i tend not to enjoy the US defective novels as much as the British ones; only because of cultural differences. Howver, I am a huge fan of Dahiel Hammett and Ryamond Chandler. From the current US ere i can't recommend anyone higher than Karin Slaughter.

There' a huge Scandinavian outpouring at the moment; try Larrson and Hemming (or whomever the chap is who wrote Wallander).

Over here in the UK I read, of course, early **** Francis and John Francombe as I am into racing big time. I have also enjoyed some Linda la Plante and Peter Robinson.

I haven't read any of the Morse stuff as I have watched every one on the Bairdvision so there's no point.
