Kil was listening to the broadcast for 15. A few things I hope you can bring up.

1) A mistake I made with Ancillary boosters........ the "load all" button is VERY bad 8).

2) You guys talked about scouting a bit. I think this is something that newer players should actually learn pretty well. Be it scouting in your pod, or with an interceptor for you small gang. Anyways, things a new scout should know beyond whats on the gate........ such as, how many in local? how many in local from the gang that is camping? How many in the next system? How old are the characters (gives you possible t2 of t1 due to age). What guns or launchers are fit (t2 vs t1, short range vs long). Killboard scouting (from cloaked ships like a falcon) ect......... can make a very big difference in a gang that you can fight, and one that you cannot.

Anyways good job guys, Kovo great vid btw and stop giving away my double ancillary booster fits 8), btw try the varg, its awesome! Stop by curse again sometime and we'll roam!

See ya!

EPISODE 14

Really excited about this episode. A new format and 2 new guests - check it out and let us know what you think =D

Quick note about the last fight you guys talk about in Episode 14 (I know I'm late) -- the small ships like the Griffin and stuff on the gate in Low -- it seems odd in low, but it occurred to me that they're probably Faction Warfare guys -- if they're mostly planning to hit war targets with their camp, they don't have to worry about gate guns and the little ships are fine.

Great, great show. Love it. Can't wait to share a pvp story that isn't terrible fail on my part. (I'll settle for only moderate fail.)

Great episode guys. The advice on video making was absolutely spot on and I couldn't of put it better myself. Next time someone asks me for tips on video making I'll just link them to Episode 15 :)

Another great episode. Never knew that the size of the cap boosters mattered. Think i loaded 200 navy cap booosters on my ASB fitted Hawk when i first tried them out P. Died as horribly as should.

Been listening to these podcasts for a couple months and it inspired my to strike out on my own. A few weeks later im actually having some success and loving the game far more.

The rapport between you guys makes listening to the hour and half or so episodes really enjoyable. Keep it up. Big smile

Obligatory: You guys are awesome, keep making this. You don't really need to hear that again, do you? Just assume all future replies from me - with exception if I say otherwise - say this anyway.

Kil2: Your best video was easily Seven. It was the best edited, it had realistic fights (or perhaps "applicable" fights is a better term - a lot of the stuff these days really isn't what most people can field when trying out solo/small gang PvP so there aren't really many lessons to learn from these videos) that were still impressive and had some of the first fight commentary stuff I've seen. When I was still teaching piracy to rookies in Blood Money, it quickly became a must watch video (though I suppose that shows how long it's been since I've done so) as it would both inspire them (goals a great when trying to motivate rookies to tough out the harsh learning curve and the deaths that come with it) and most rookies had a greater basis for lessons like splitting enemies afterwards. I really wish there were more like this (Endless Subversion's Mind Games was similar, if I remember right)

Kovorix: The Maelstrom fight was popular because it showcased the best of "spectacle" PvP video fights (those that are packed with conditions that produce produce impressive fights, yet atypical fights, as is the popular trend now now) in that it displayed an apparently weak (relatively speaking, of course - this is Eve), uh, protagonist might be the best word, taking on much larger and stronger force and succeeding (in this case, spectacularly so) via wits and tactics. While yes, some aspects - like the use of crystals and a boosting alt - can be debated as a detractor to the fight, it cannot be argued that you showed us some new and innovative concepts (the proper use of the new shield boosters and the idea that dropping guns for utility may be a worth it).

On a side note; adding that fight after the credits was a good call. It was certainly was worth keeping there, but not in the same segment.

Other Things:

  • I'm actually curious as to whether the mindset of your typical player will change when fitting ships from "I want as much damage, tank and/or speed I can get" as the primary considerations to "I want more of the less quantifiable positives such as smart-bombs, etc.". In the past (and I suppose In the present still, but whatever) I have been a big advocate for using utility and unconventional ship designs to take the upper hand where typically they'd be outmatched either by skill points or by shear attrition so I'll be interested (and, I'll admit, somewhat worried) to see if this will become a trend.

  • Some of my thoughts on the new shield boosters:

  • - One thing you seemed to miss is they give previously buffer fit ships a way to have longer, more sustained fights (particularly kiters). One of the things I've always found lacking on the typical nano-cane is that if I'm fighting a larger gang and trying to split them over a significant amount of time is that I tended to lose my buffer while there are still possible targets on the field, and I have to leave completely to repair (unless they stay on field, obviously).

    - I agree that the shield boosters need to have some sort of re-balance, though I'm not sure how. Perhaps inverting the number of loaded boosters to booster size ratio (e.g. 800's can load what 400's do now, but 400's can only load what 800's do now)? This would mean you can't fill your bay up with lots of smaller boosters and tank for a ridiculously long time. Unless I'm incredibly stupid (certainly shouldn't rule this out), this would mean that the amount of time you can tank is halved.

  • As for low-sec gate camps: they don't hold the profit that they did in days of old or the entertainment valued that other forms of PvP provides so they seem to rarely be given the attention that is needed to organize a proper fleet. That, and they tend to be a venture of lower-skilled or newer pirates trying out the entire spectrum of piracy.

  • On videos:

  • - I hope that Windows Movie Maker doesn't catch on for videos made for enjoyment or instruction (I point you back at Seven and Mind Games for good example layout for instructional videos). Not having a proper fight overview is incredibly frustrating, particularly if it's hard to tell what's dying or not (that latest from GonRin is a good example of that, if you've got a lot of time to waste), and I doubt you can do this in WMM - and no, title screens before hand don't make up for it at all.

    - Queen was awesome in one of Fon Revedhort's Rocket series - though I can't remember which off the top of my head. As for music in general, it first and foremost needs to match the tempo of the fight and secondly needs to be relatively unoffensive. It doesn't need to be popular, or particularly liked, but hurting my ears from stuff like yelling or growling (or that one tool who thought Nickelback was a good idea) is a really easy way to get me to stop watching. It shouldn't have intrusive vocals either.

    - I like to see things I don't typically see - something new. I'm not really interested in kiting video 1234 as I do it in-game a lot. I also don't want to see things that are ridiculously outlandish and I really, really, really don't want to watch the same thing that's in every video (this, I believe, is the problem with Guados' stuff. It's just so common at the moment). Smart play is always nice to see. GonRin said something a long the lines of "I fly this stuff because it's proven by others already" - but proven isn't interesting to watch and when you show it again, you're going to get negative feeedback.

Also: More guests, particularly of varied (but still solo/small gang) perspective. You guys seem to have pretty similar opinions, and sometimes this leads to boring discussions.

Why do I even have a signature these days?

The Baby Steps of Victory

TL;DR - Long-time wormholer gets bored playing "Cheap Kills with Expensive Ships", can't find a decent fight in Syndicate, so puts his main in Faction Warfare and finally gets his first solo kill. The end.

Now then...

So I was having a pretty terrible night last night. Lost a bomber to lag/disconnect/gate rats. Lost a Wolf to a crappy little Griffin (I let him get a tackle and come in because seriously, Griffin? What are the odds he's going to perma-jam me with two multispecs? Pretty good, apparently...), then lost a ECCM-boosted Incursus (cheap) and a head full of spurs (not cheap) when I came back after the Griffin and got jumped by a Thrasher instead. Getting your pod hung up on a structure so you can't warp out? Super-fun.

Honestly, though, I don't mind the Thrasher fight -- at least it was a fight -- I don't mind losing, but it bugs me not to be able to fight back at all. (So much ECM hate.)

So anyway. I take a break. Log out. Listen to the last segment of BSB Episode 4, and go to bed.

Come back this morning and hop in a Merlin. Three 125mm rails. DCU, Magstab, and Overdrive in the lows. Mids are an afterburner, scram, web, and Medium Ancillary Shield Booster, because Kovorix. Rigs are all resist mods, plugging holes, so I'm at ~65% resists everywhere. AB pushes me about 960m/s, cold, and gets up around 1170 hot, and with the scram-web I figure I can dictate range pretty well. Sig's pretty small.

This time, I head toward Amarr/Minmatar warzone in The Bleak Lands, because I'm tired of trying to fight guys in Gal/Cal complexes while a bunch of Caldari rats throw missiles at me. Amarr NPCs miss. A lot.

So I poke around a bit and find a system with no complexes open and a war target in local. No stations, one gate. I scan and open the minor complex, which has an accel gate on it that only lets in t1 frigs, destroyers, and faction frigs. I had a vexor/rupture fight a few days ago where a Falcon joined in -- something I could have prevented if I'd jumped into the right sized complex instead of out in the open, so I like complexes a lot right now.

The other guy's showing up on short d-scan (21 million km), but he's not dropping on the gate, and he's not in the complex. I can't get him to come after me, and I figure he wants me to engage the complex and get a bunch of npcs shooting at me first, so it's ... fair? Whatever. I'll take the rats if it gets me a fight.

Anyway, I jump in the complex and start the timer running. (Orbiting the objective at <10km while rats keep spawning and spawning and spawning until the time runs out or you die. Pretty easy to speed tank.)

Sure enough, I get up to about 25 rats and here comes the guy, flying an Incursus. Like the Merlin, it got revamped in the most recent update and it's really really good for a t1 frig. If you favor tank, it can dual rep with an injector and tank like 165dps for a long time and still do about 180 up close with Neutrons, or you can sacrifice the tank and adjust that dps up quite a lot. It's scary, but it's usually short range (rail fits are less common, because Neutrons are sexy), and I like this fight for me.

He likes it too, I guess, probably because my Merlin looks like a disco ball right now with all the lasers flying around me.

I let him get in to about 15 and try to keep him at about 8km, but I'm a bit faster than he is, so I'm getting away and out of my scram range. I simplify, because I'm bad at Eve, and just let him get into about 6km and just hit keep at range, web/scram, and set to work. I'm using rails, so my DPS isn't great, but he really can't do a lot to me at 5 or 6 km, except for his drone, which I ignore -- it's doing a little damage, and my keep at range thing is letting the rats hit me a little, but the ASB is tanking everything easily -- I love these things for kiting ships -- it gives you such longevity.

I've flown the Incursus build I imagine he's flying a LOT, recently, so I know pretty much how it works. I get him into high armor pretty quick, watch him rep, and keep the pressure on so he's got to use his cap booster. He's probably got a small booster loaded with a 200, so I wait til I see his armor repping kind of lag behind (he's reloading and trying to float by on one rep), and THEN I overheat, and push him into structure. His speed is all over the place now, because he's thinking maybe he wants to get out, but with the web and my greater speed all he's doing is flailing -- except following his flailing means I'm taking more rat fire and my ASB is working harder -- I'm definitely getting low on boosters charges.

His cap reload goes off, and suddenly he's back at almost full armor for a second, but the writing is on the wall. I keep the heat on, push his reps as hard as I can, and as soon as his cap booster's reloading, he pops.

First solo kill. Ever.

And then I almost DIE because I was doing Keep at Range and when he popped I stopped moving. I oveheat my ASB; I'm almost out of charges, but I'd shut off the auto-reload and just let it keep running off my cap, which is nearly full, and that gets me through. Barely. I nearly cap myself out while getting into warp, and get away with 40% structure, where that guy hadn't even managed to get me into armor during the fight. Still: alive!

Boring fight for anyone else, I'm sure, but I was really really happy with it -- the ship fit did exactly what I was hoping, I didn't screw anything up too badly, didn't forget too many things in the middle of the fight (could have overheated the guns sooner, and forgot to overheat the ASB at all until the end), and got my first 1v1 kill. Achievement unlocked, and all very much thanks to this podcast and the encouragement to get out there, lose some ships, and have fun.

Thanks, guys.

Heya,

Kil2 and Kovorix, you told us that the tournament maybe intervene with you schedule and I just wanted to know if a show is coming or if you decided to postpone it?
No pressure here, I know you put a lot of time into the show and you do what you can, so just let us know if possible.

Cheers,

Hey guys sorry for the late update. We thought we had something lined up to compensate for me being busy with the tournament but it didn't come together.

Best case scenario is me and Kovorix get a normal episode recorded early this week, which is possible. Worst case scenario is we skip this week and get something done asap to release next weekend or the following weekend.

Very sorry, hopefully the tournament makes up for it some. Also, following the tournament today I live streamed a roam which ended up being amazing and its a full 2 hours with live commentary. That should be up on my youtube channel by the end of today.

Enjoy the week and you'll hear from us soon!

That roam vid is pretty epic, especially when at least an hour in you're panicked that's it's not recorded after such unexpected success. Lol
