When you open up your cargo hold it tells you the estimated value of your cargo in the lower right hand corner.

Any idea where that data comes from?

Presumably some formula similar to that used for insurance payouts, based on buy and sell orders. It was added with the updated inventory system.

Insurance takes into account minerals that's why faction ships have such pathetic pay outs. If this is the case I'd take this cargo value with a truck load of salt.

As far as I can tell, it comes from 3 months ago or thereabouts.

it looks like 3 months moving average.
I can run some regressions on it, but.. meh, i don't care that much.

Many items seem to be overpriced. I guess it isn't removing outliers from the average, such as sell orders with a few extra zeros in them.

Most of the items which are wrong are the ones that took a dive.
notice most meta4's are wrong.

The moving average is most likely being calculated by occured transactions instead of buy orders. so odd orders with a few extra zeroes mean nothing.

K, I've made a test:

I've never bought tritanium the last year and bought 2 bil units of tritanium, all orders higher than 6.2 ISK. Current avg price is 6.27 in Jita.

Current estimated price is shown as 5.45 ISK, so the data is definitely neither connected with my transaction nor with the moving average.

Made another try with zydrine ... those values don't make any sense imo.

When i said moving average i meant region and maybe cross-region moving average.

Not your specific one. everyone sees the same figures on these estimations.

The prices are not fixed, I've noticed several high value faction items that have moved. They aren't based on mineral prices either - at least not for faction items. They seem to lag behind the market. It may be some sort of moving average of item trades.
