I've been completing the career agent missions, had no problems so far, pretty easy. Right now I'm going through the advanced military missions, at The Exam mission. It's the mission where you have to assassinate one of the mercenary leaders while dealing with a couple minor mercs. I can't get close enough to the pirate leader before he uses a warp scrambler & stasis web on my ship. Pretty much cripples me while he and the other pirates pick me off. I'm using Proton S & EMP S ammunition, they barely put dents into the leader. There is some in-game suggestions on how to deal with it, but it's all going through one ear and out the other.

How do I counter the warp scrambler & web? What kind of ammunition is best to use in this situation? What should I outfit my ship with? This is all also just basic questions I need answered to succeed period. Completely new and a lot of this is overwhelming.

There is no straight counter to the web and scram. Without more info on how you're fitting your ship, there's not much I can really say. In general, what you'll want to do is try to take the leader out ASAP, which can be hard when you're just starting out, but not impossible.

I'm going to be logging into the game in about... oh, 2, 2.5 hours. I'll add you to my watch list and come see you in-game to try to help you out. From there it'll be easier to talk about your fittings, how you're going about the mission, and I can lend you a hand right then and there, whether it be logistics support or adding some extra firepower, whichever you prefer.

If you see me before I see you, convo me and we'll fleet up.

_It's very simple, really. If you see Tengus on scan, they are ratting. If you see a shitload of Tengus, the Russians are blobbing. If you see Proteuses on scan, they will be on top of you in about a second. If you see a shitload of Proteuses, the big boys are having a goodfight. _

There is a straight counter against web and scrams, it's called Range. Both have a limited range, stay out of it and they cant web/scram you.

But a total fit of your ship would help us in givin advice.

As mentioned, distance is best. Welcome and keep up the right attitude you seem to have!

This.

Use artillery and ammo with a bonus to range to your advantage. Also which ship are you flying? If you are flying the starter ship, ditch it for something better like a rifter or thrasher if you've got the skills to use one... just don't use them on the missions with the warnings that your ship will be blown up... because on those missions, your ship will get blown up. If your ship can equip missiles, use a light missile launcher instead of a rocket launcher.

For keeping range you have 2 options, right click and orbit at beyound web range, which is over 10km, or right click and keep at distance.

EMP and Proton are projectile ammo, so you might want to use artillery guns rather than autocannons for increased range (though lower damage per second).

Artillery are long range/slow firing, autocannons are short range/quick firing.

You can then adjust range and damage type with various types of ammunition.

If it's Dagan, you might find you need to get some help*.

Thank you everyone =) Dare Knight helped me out in game and I'm back on track. I wasn't using artillery and that was the problem. Ranged fighting seems to make everything much easier. Yeah I was using a Thrasher, got 5 280mm Scout artillery equipped, small shield boost, 1 min afterburner, Damage Control 1, and a gyrostabilizer. Have 2 more artillery guns to fit once I get my engineering or electronics up

Very nice. Congrats on asking for help. Suffering in silence is too often done.

Don't be afraid to convo ppl that help you on the forums or send them eve mails. Sometimes working through a problem is step by step.

I'll just have to ask you what's so good about it then :s

As far as I'm aware it's a fairly normal answer...

People say the community in Eve is toxic.

It's not. At least, it's not if you don't act as if you're entitled to answers Smile (Well, other than the trolls. But they're just here to have some fun. and are easily ignorable)

Woo! CSM XI!

Yeah, to be honest I've always been silent in online games. I'm glad to see how friendly this community is, makes me feel welcome. Thanks everyone

As it delivers the most important thing in 1 sentence.

Stay polite and you will get a long way in EVE, rage / act rude and you soon quit

Eve is a PvP game, and thus players are very friendly, because if your usual habit _isn't_ politeness and joviality there can be some very definite in-game consequences. Specifically, annoy someone enough and you'll get blown up, scammed, removed from your corp, etc.

Basically, when half the point of the game is to stick the dagger in the next guy's back, people are either polite to avoid becoming a target or outright friendly because they wouldn't be playing a PvP game, much less a FFA-style one like Eve or FFA DAOC, if they weren't emotionally capable of dealing with competition without being a **** about it.

Remember, though, that in-game the whole point is to get stuff, usually other people's stuff, with as little effort as possible. Adopt the old FPS attitude of "right, man, good game" when someone cheats you or blows you up and you'll be much less likely to turn into one of those guys that describes the community as 'toxic'. We're playing a game where we're genocidal space cyborgs, being bastards in-game is obligatory no matter how genial we are about discussing strategy with you or giving you a hand with ship replacements when your pod is floating in space.

This alone is reason enough for everyone to be forced at gun point to play eve at least once in their lives...snicker... As an elder gamer myself... the only community I feel truly at ease with is the eve community atm.

It's one of lifes great mysteries that when you arm everyone to the teeth... everyone becomes super nice... lol...

Too bad there's so few of us that know that... anymore...

EVE is a huge and complex game, and relies greatly on interaction with other players.

How to survive and enjoy EVE:

* Make friends. It is a boring game without friends.

* Don't pilot, anchor, or invest in what you can't afford to lose.

* Realize that every gain or loss is because of your own actions, or inactions. It is always your own fault, or victory!

* Learn from your mistakes, and from the mistakes of others (you'll not live long enough to make them all yourself).

* Don't take it personal. It is just a game. Laugh at your losses, and celebrate your victories.

* Sometimes even people that destroy your stuff can be helpful if you treat them with respect (you did lose to them after all) and ask what you could have done better.
