Can a cormorant or other destroyer handle low sec or 0.0 ratting ? Saw a video on YouTube posted recently of a destroyer pulling it off? Is this realistic? Or only possible with high skills and lots of luck?

I have not done it with destroyer. I use t1 cruiser for that sort of thing. Same tactics. The usual bs spawn in the belt is two bs rats and two frig rats. Kill the frigs, then closely orbit the bs.

Low sec...maybe. Null...probably not going to be effective. You CAN do it with sick fits and perfect skills, but it would take forever to get through the BS spawns' tanks. Totally not worth it. As mentioned above, a T1 cruiser would be a way better choice.

The other interesting thing is that he says in the vid that the coercer cost 10 mil, I guess that is the total, ship+fit=10 mil. I guess the ship is t2 fitted.

A t1 cruiser is about 6 mil. Maybe spend a couple more mil on t1 mods. You will be effective in low and null.

What the guy who made the video forgot to mention was that knowing which areas of nullsec are empty at which time of day is something that takes lots of experience. I can imagine quite a few people watching that video and wanting to give it a try only to die on an entry gate.

that's exactly what i was thinking. if you are a new player you'll think to yourself 'i can do that too!' and then you spend the last 10mil you have on a meta4 cormorant or coercer, fly down into 0.0 and instantly die in a gatecamp.

I should buy an Ishtar.

you can rat in frigates if you want....question is why would you lol.

Long term money maker, t1 cruiser like caracal. Not end of the world if it goes boom and I actually have ratted in in .1 systems and 0.0 and it can work. I would not hit triple 1.8 mil spawns in it as it will be pita and ammo eater...but to each their own.

If needing a sec status fix your best bet would be a stealth bomber. Hit one BS, kill it , gtfo. Next system over rinse lather repeat. Avoid spawns with known scram frigates for obvious reasons lol.

Or going for a mix of the 2 I'd recommend a wellt trained AF. decent camp clearers, and can work belts half decent. Just bring ammo bpc's and make ammo in npc stations from loot melt downs. Pricey way to rat other wise (jag and even wolf I did this in sucked down tons of ammo) . I did it when bored and out dicking around in an AF. Kill a rat or 5 while hoping for something better to shoot came along.

Assault frigates are a much better choice.

I think it depends on your skills and what support you have. For me I found the Drake to be highly effective. Of course I had a POS to hide out at when hostiles came in system. Without that I think the cost of buying new Drakes might be more than what you made from ratting.

If you didn't have a POS a SB might be more effective because of the cloak. I've never tested one to see how fast it would kill the rats though. I've used a Caracal and Cormorant for lowsec ratting. The Cormorant was painfully slow but eventually killed the rats. The Caracal was much better but wasn't very fast. I couldn't imagine using a Destroyer for nullsec ratting.

If you want to go out to nullsec I suggest joining a corporation based there so you have some protection.

How's 3 BS rats in null different from 3 BS rats in a highsec mission? Other than higher bounty for same tier asteroid rat compared to deadspace rat. Is that supposed to be some kind of accomplishment? I'll be impressed when a noob in a dessie solopwns a bubble camp.Roll

Yes, it can be done... But you get the kind of performance you expect from a 10m isk ship. It is easiest against Serpentis.

CCP should add more NPC 0.0 space to open it up and liven things up: the Stepping Stones project.
