Running EVE on a 27" iMac

I'm in the market to buy a 27" iMac, and I know there are some people on here playing EVE on theirs (bootcamp or otherwise) so was hoping you guys could answer a few questions.

How does the 6770M hold up dualboxing, is it worth it to splash out on the 3.1 Ghz model with the 6970M?

Does the iMac have any temperature issues, or is it sufficiently cooled for long sessions?

Thanks

Not entirely sure on dual-boxing, but beware the heat monster.

My extended EVE sessions have left scorch marks on my screen, get applecare extended warranty and enjoy your free replacement after a couple of years...

Wow, that's crazy. I understand the warranty is worth it, but if I'm risking ruining the hardware from gaming on this machine then maybe I will wait for the next iteration to see if these issues get resolved.

I would suggest getting the Mac Pro base unit as it is not as thin as an anorexic and has far superior ventilation. I use that for my other machine and it's awesome. Love the 27" screen on the iMac though

One of the main reasons I'd get the iMac is for the screen and space-saving factors. The Mac Pro looks lovely but I think it's quite overpriced at the moment for what it offers. At that price point a thunderbolt display + Retina MBP would be better :)

Sadly Apple's products look great on the eye but their performance suffers. I had one of the old Macbook Pros and it died after 2 years due to excessive heating.

No issue though, get the iMac and applecare then after a year or so just call them up and get a brand new one TwistedTwisted

I have been using my 1.5 year old 27" iMac with nary a problem. I personally always get the better video card because then you will be able to play EVE Online longer before the machine is no longer capable of doing so.

Yes this is what I'm planning on doing with the current iteration, although I might give it a couple of months and see if they do a refresh.

I play on the 27'' iMac (one year old i7 option, latest Lion, 16G RAM, 1 TB HDD, 6750M with 2Gigs).

I have no problem whatsoever running up to 3 clients on 2 screens (built in 27'' and one 27'' external Thunderbolt).

The CPU temp stays below 50°C at any time and Eve cannot even get the i7 processor beyond 50% usage.
The GPU however does a lot of work and without additional means goes up to 80°C. As I do not like such a hot Mac infront of me (not that it hurt the thing) I installed magic prefs and upped the internal fans to like 30-40% minimum speed. The GPU then goes down to like 65°C running 3 clients.
You can run the 3 clients with all grafix maxed if you are not in a fleet battle.
For fleet battles I turn off shadows and gun effects, but I can even run 3 clients with all brackets ON (if need be) with the current Eve client.

So you are good to go, do not listen to the guy who prolly does not even have a late 27'' iMac... this is BY FAR the best computer I have ever owned and it outclasses my MacPro I use for work.
I can also recommend to get an SSD, that will really blow you away speed wise... (I got an aftermarket one and had it installed by a Mac technician with the MacFixit kit as the Apple SSDs were to costly for me)

The only thing that really pisses me off at with the Mac Client is the launcher. Running multiple clients and managing your settings has become a hell of a lot more complicated and I hope CCP does something to mitigate the situation or drops the crap launcher entirely.

Brilliant, that's good news! I think I'd go for a bootcamp setup as I've heard Windows handles multiple clients better. But the performance sounds excellent and it's the same options I'd go for.

Hello there,

I have played Eve on a 27" iMac for the last couple years and can say it dual boxes like a dream. Eve with 2 clients running there is no lag and CPU usage is only at about 15-20%

My spec is below:

Computer: Apple 27" iMac
Ram: 8GB DDR3
CPU: 2.93GHz Intel Core i7
HDD: 2TB
Graphics: ATI Radeon 5750 1GB
Eve Resolution: 2560 * 1440
OS: OS X Mountain Lion 10.8

Eve runs at around 80 FPS full graphics with this Mac.

I also have a relatively new 27" Imac it goes like a charm on max settings with AA off.
My new Macbook Pro on modest settings goes fine until I start surfing the web in the back ground outside of the eve client.
Then it will freeze up and crash.
If stay in the in game browser it doesn't happen.
