Tutorial and lack of necessary skills

After a very long hiatus from trying the trial, I decided it was finally time to commit to EVE. I created this character since my original character is Minmatar, and I enjoy missiles more than lasers or guns. I start up the tutorial, finish the first mission. I start the second mission which involves fitting my ship with a blaster and a shield booster. Here's where I get caught up. The blaster goes on fine, no hangups. When I try and fit the shield booster, I'm met with an error that I don't have the necessary skills to fit that. I check under my skill tab, and shield operation is no where to be found. Now I'm at a loss because this is a completely new character, yet I'm not provided with the necessary skills to even complete the tutorial. I tried making a second character to see if it replicated the problem, which it did. Not sure what to do now, any help would be much appreciated.

The same is true for one of the tutorial missions that involve mining. For the 3rd part of that tutorial you need to manufacture Civilian Afterburners. Unfortunately, the neccessary Industry skill is not part of the character.

My guess is that this has something to do with what you gave your character as background. But you should at least have all skills for the tutorials.

This is really weird, did anyone test this before it was released?...

Sadly, this is before any of the "career tutorials". My only workaround was to not equip it, then move onto career tutorials and buy the necessary skills I need as I go.

As you can see from my character I am a longish time player, but in the New Year I took out a second account so had to go through just what you are dealing with.

I'm sad to say the tutorials are somewhat of a mess to say the least. This has been brought up with the Dev’s on many occasions and at one time there was talk of the NPE (New Player Experience) having a complete re-vamp. What happened to this update I don’t know, it seems so far nothing has changed.

I do feel sorry for you but do stick with it if you can, Eve has the learning curve of a cliff face and is often referred to as ‘spreadsheets in space’, but once you can get into the game it can be well worthwhile, I’m still here Shocked.

Remember, Eve does not create ‘game-play’ you create your own ‘game-play’, it’s up to you how you play the game. Everyone is out to get you, scam you, and shoot you, but then so can you do the same to them and that’s the fun.

Welcome to EvE.

Yeah, I figured as much.

But it really is a shame the devs treat the tutorials with such a lack of love. Hard to tell how many people they lose by this.
And the tutorials would be so easy to make better, which makes the matter even worse.

Oh well. :)
