visual glitch: yellow star fields

I've noticed that after I've been playing awhile, the backgrounds in the game (star fields) turn yellow with stars attached. Also after jumping into a new system, my ship glows white instead of see-through. The game is fine after restarting, but I'd like to avoid that when possible.

Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening?
