Apple just announced them.

The good (For Eve);

High resolution screen
Faster graphics card
Magsafe 2 plug (may not burn up as often)

The bad

No 17 inch model
Will there be compatibility issues?

We all await news form someone who tries Eve on it.

Indeed. I imagine EVE looking absolutely gorgeous on that screen. They may have to bump the UI size up a bit, though.

We have UI scaling, I would indeed by very interested to find out how EVE runs natively on it.

There is UI scaling, but 125% is the largest option. The Retina display has almost twice the pixels per inch of a normal display. Brackets are going to get real small. But they will be in high resolution. Will small, but high resolution look good? Also the new Macs will have a set of display options that is sort of like UI scaling in what it does. What happens if a user turns that on?

We have the ability to go to 200%. But clients right now have the maximum of 150%. You need to have a vertical resolution of at least 1200 pixels. So a 16:10 widescreen display of 1920x1200 needs to be in use. I don't think Apple sell any displays that are 16:10 anymore, so you won't see that.

The OSX inherent ability for UI scaling, is adapted to their software only. 3rd parties would have to work with their retina technology to make such a change available. You can see this if you do a quick google of the macbook pro retina and google chrome. Google Chrome is blurry in comparison to Safari.

As for support, I am not sure about applications that are driven by a 3D rendering engine. Will just have to find out how EVE works on the new line of MBP's when we can.

The new MBP 15 inch is 2880 x 1800 pixels, which is both over 1200 and 16 to 10.

Actually apple may have lost me as a customer with the lack of a 17inch version.

The IT guys here at work think there will be a 17" version in the future. Reading on the internet I get the feeling that the holdup is no one can make a 17" display with the 220 pixels per inch needed for a Retina display. But they will. Eventually even 24" screens with a Retina display will be available. Its coming, we just do not know when.

And yes, the lack of a 17" version turns me off too, and I will await developments. Maybe we should all go to an apple store, tell them we want to order one, ask for the 17" version. When told it does not exist, act all disappointed and request to be notified when it becomes available.

I was hoping for a 13" retina.
If i can understand why they don't have a 17" i can't see why not having the 13" retina.

Yea, hopefully it's something they have to do wether they want to or not. Also the lack of a pcmi slot is also a deal breaker. Being in the video production field Apple has kinda been giving us the middles for the last few years. Every Apple event now has this ominous feeling of "what tools are we going to loose now"?

Funny, I was just thinking that the next time I go to the Apple store I would do that too. Hell I've been doing that to them with the MacPros for a while now.

It also lacks an ethernet port, another loss of functionality. You got to use a adapter to USB. At work we got far to many users to have everyone on wireless, we got to use ethernet.

I think it's a Thunderbolt adaptor cable.

So has somebody tried EVE out on one yet? If so, do tell....

The analyst that correctly predicted that the RMBP being released alongside the MBP thinks that the 13" RMBP was delayed due to yield and assembly issues and should be released around October. Naturally, YMMV, etc.

Just a few notes for things that have popped up in this topic.

First, unless there's a huge hue and cry for the general populace over the loss of the 17" MacBook Pro, it is unlikely that it will be coming back, sad to say. It is no longer available at all, in either Retina or previous versions. Apple has said it comprised about 2% of their overall Macintosh sales, that's not a very sustainable number, sad to say.

The new machines can either use a USB to ethernet adaptor, or a Thunderbolt adaptor, or a Thunderbolt break-out box that has multiple ports. Thunderbolt is great, there are already PCI cages for it. Want to add the latest graphics card to your MacBook Air? Have at it.

The Retina display is going to be a pain for those of us with poorer vision quality.

Well, on my new Retina MBP the EVE client does not appear. The launcher works ok, and the client appears to start (I get the sound from the log in window), but there is nothing displayed. I'm just looking at whatever was on my screen beforehand.

Hmm. Issue with Wine and the scaler?

Can you get anything from the game proper? The esc window? The bug reporting window?

Nothing at all. I see no indications that the game is running.

Got it working!

It won't start with the scaler set to 1920x1200, but when I set it down to 1440x900 it started and I was able to set it to windowed mode and then change the resolution again. I'll update on the performance soon.

Progress!. I want to know what it looks like when you set it to 2880 x 1800...

Also I note that you got it to work when the setting was one half of 2880 x 1800. I wonder if what is going on is the OS is presenting apps with a resolution of 1440 x 900, taking the info for that lower resolution and interpolating it to the higher resolution. With 4 pixels where you normally would have one, everything is the same size, just cleaner looking.
