Looking at this map, I see there are a few major alliances:
    (updated to newer map)
  1. Goonswarm Federation
  2. Razor Alliance
  3. Intrepid Crossing
  4. Legion of xxDEATHxx
  5. While Noise
  6. IT Alliance
  7. RED Overlord
  8. Northern Coalition
  9. Against All Authorities
  10. Red Alliance

Which alliance is right for me? A brief description about each alliance would be helpful!

Thanks...

That map has to be at least a year old...

heres the latest one:

http://go-dl1.eve-files.com/media/corp/Verite/influence.png

That link is always up to date.

Looks a little different, huh? Lol

edit: well, not that old, but 6 months LOL

edit2: as to picking an alliance, I'm not sure this is the right way to do it.

After all, you seem to be leaning on the assumption that they'll just let you in. This is not the case.

Still, for criteria in picking an alliance that is good for you, I would start by finding out which ones have a strong presence in your timezone.

To the first in your list which is Goons.

DON'T fall for their invite scams where you have to pay ISK to get in or have your stuff contracted to be shipped.
You won't see eighter again, and it's even possible they let you jump in a 'x' number of systems and then pod you.

But in general, those mighty powerblocks might be reluctant to let lonely new players in. IMO the best way to get into null (and in a powerblock alliance) is to start with the smaller alliance that surround them.

In there you will get to know the tricks of the trade of living in null-sec and also if you try hard you will get noticed by the larger alliances (or the corps which make up those alliances). With that new doors will open.

If you want to get into one of the larger alliances straight away, best is to look for one that is active in your TZ like Sir Substance said, and look which corp in that alliance is recruiting and convo them. Also usually those larger alliances have got public channel, try to find out how they are called and join that channel. It is a great opportunity to get to know a few people in the alliance and also to ask questions about joining them.

Hope this helps in your quest to be a null-sec alliance member

EDIT: In your old map there was still the thing they once called the NC. They cascaded and are no longer big.

Also Shadow of xDeathx and Red alliance (with all related sub-alliances: Red Citizens, Red Overlord, Legion of xDeathx etc.) are mostly made up out of Russian speaking (and typing) members. So if you join them be prepared to take a crashcourse Russian or switch to any translating page quite often.

EDIT2: Actually this was a way I was going to try to get into null-sec. In the end, no alliance would let me in, but that can be different on each pilot as each pilot has got its own specialty. Eventually my highsec corp joined a nullsec alliance and we are now happy and settled in null-sec.

Your best bet would probably be to look for a corp that suits your needs and you get along with, and then joining an alliance with them. After all, you join a corp not an alliance. Your ties with your corp mates should always be stronger than your ties to alliance.

There is a decent guide to finding the right corp for you here:

1:Goons: Never been a member lots of scams regarding these guys, Marmite Alliance (you either love them or you hate them)
2: WN : Russians with a few English Speakers, Some good corps
3: IT alliance is pretty much now called Raiden: Like a reverse Goon Alliance another Marmite Alliance.
4: Red Overlord: Russians I've been a membe,r mostly good lads down in the south east. They sure do like their Drakes.

You need to say what your looking for in EVE or what you want to do before anyone can recommend an allaince for you.
If your new to the game I would recommend a smaller alliance to get your bearings living in 0.0.

I pretty much spent 19 hours flying around null-sec on alts and I can confirm that, for the most part, that map is fairly accurate.

Also interesting to note: If you want to go into null-sec, aim for areas owned by major Allainces. The more "space" an Alliance owns, the less active they are in any given system. The smaller Alliances tend to be highly active and concentrated in what they do own.

Well then that would explain the accuracy, now wouldn't it?

Thx.

I've heard worse TEST-Goons things =)
Also, thought those major botting gangs (a.k.a. DRF) were pretty much in that category

Thanks everyone. I have narrowed my choice down to Northern Coalition, White Noise and Raiden since they are are close to my home system.

That is a monumentally unwise method to use for choosing a new corp. Also, this:

My opinion:

1.) You will never join an alliance but a corp.
2.) Never join alliance on the point, how big is their space on the influence map. With the influence map some parts are big overstretched so space looks bigger.

3.) Very very likely you will have a really hard time to get into one of the corps of a big alliance. For one reason only, they are very affraid of spies so will hesitate to bring in new unknown players. Like I posted before, it's better to join high-sec corp and move to null eventually with them or join a corp in one of the many smaller alliances in null-sec, easier to get into and a great way to get you noticed by the larger ones if you want to make a switch.

Best thing now would be to visit their space so you can narrow down more!
