Here's how to watch local: When you get to a system, check all the names in there. Now you know who is there. Now, [select all] that list. When someone new comes in, they won't be selected. Check them out.

If you have known gankers, or ganker corps, set them negative. Now you'll see an icon next to known threats. Maybe make an intel channel or browse kill boards for hulk kills. Set those people negative. You can browse during a mining op, using the in game browser.

Usually you just want to tank one layer -- either shield OR armor. This is because you only have a limited amount of grid for fitting tanking mods, so usually you get the best bang for your buck by ensuring all your resist mods and extenders/plates are either on Armor or Shields. Which you tank depends on a number of factors, but generally if you have extra mid slots, shield tank; if you have extra lows, armor tank. Note there are some low slot mods (mostly Power Diagnostic System) which help shield tanks, but no mid slot mods which help armor tanks. Also, regardless of what type of tank you choose, most PvP tanks should fit a DCU II. Trimark/CDFE rigs are very useful. If you shield tank, consider investing in Thermodynamics skill. You can overheat your hardeners to give you an unexpectedly large tank.

In addition to tank modules, you can also try fitting for agility (Nanofibers). I-Stabs increase agility more, but also increase your signature radius making you quicker to lock, which somewhat negates their usefulness.

To avoid getting ganked in high-sec you want to buffer tank; i.e. ensure your effective hit points (EHP) is as high as possible. This is because "all" you need to do is survive for until Concord shows up, and repairers will not be able to repair enough HP to make them worthwhile in that range of time. If you need to tank belt rats, you may need to compromise though.

Note that battleships can fit much stiffer tanks than dedicated mining ships, so are much, much less vulnerable to getting ganked.


Try to mine in a system with fewer people in local. You might have to mine further away from Jita/in worse systems, but you will be safer. Gankers also tend to target busy systems because there's more likely to be targets there.

How you react depends on how much risk you are willing to take. At a minimum, this should mean aligning out when someone suspicious enters local. If you are in a system less than ~12AU from all the gates, you should be able to figure out what ship entered local through the directional scan. Destroyers, some cruisers, and T3 battlecruisers are the most commonly used ganking ships -- if you see these enter local, be very cautious.


If you align towards an object at 75% of max speed, you can warp to that object with no delay. Aligning to the object at a slower speed will still decrease the amount of time taken to warp.



You don't want to survive a suicide gank, you want to avoid being in that situation in the first place.

• When you warp to an asteroid belt, bookmark an asteroid ~70km away, then warp off and warp back to that asteroid. If a ganker warps to your belt, it will take them a while to get close enough to gank you, and you have time to warp off. Note you can warp directly to objects > 150 km away, which is why you want to stay closer than that from the warp-in point.
• If someone is getting close to you in a belt, or 10/20/30km away in the opposite direction from a celestial, they are probably trying to set up a warp-in on you.
• Directional scan is your friend. You can use it to look for classes of ships which are commonly used for ganking, and combat scanner probes (used for getting warp-ins). You can also use it to figure out if someone is warping to you before they land on grid
