Actually read the webpage, it looks like its a one way trip.

yeah, it's more efficient to not look into getting them back off the rock once they're down. so the plan is that once they're there, they're there till they time out.

yup, thus a never ended tv show about living on mars. Not going to lie I hate reality TV, but I'd watch it. you know yo would to. it's freakin mars dude.

24 hours of a guy sitting playing paddle ball because there's nothing to do on mars

That's silly use your brain. it would be one ep a week, 40 minutes of stuff contained down to 40 monutes.

plus think of the drama of being stuck in small quaters with other people. I assume the show would be canceled once murder took place. I would watch a show that had the director that far away :P

Mars at its closest point is 35 million miles away....... the moon is what? 250 thousand miles? I dont see us reaching mars even in 100 years. Lets say they do make it to mars.... they would have to wait almost 2 years before they could make a return trip because of mars orbit. Suicide mission..............

* The US should really annex canada.

Read this book a long time ago where this happened. Can't remember the title though.

Basically this happens.

* US Discusses and later Announces that they will Annex Canada. They sell it to there people that it will be easy and bloodless.
* Canada surrenders.
* US sends 20000 Troops to every Canadian Airport to ensure stabilization and transition.
* Planes land and Canada jams their Communications. Jeeps armed with Tow Missiles pull up along side. Over Megaphone Canada announces that if anyone tries to deplane or the US invades they will killed.
* All bridges and tunnels to Canada are destroyed by Canadian Special Forces already in place.
* British Military starts landing troops and equipment.
* US send most of there navy to enact a blockade of Canada's massive coastline.
* British fleet approaches and makes it clear that if any Shipping is stopped or boarded they will launch Anti-Ship Missiles into US Carriers and Assault Ships. The Bloodless Annexation plan now has the US public both pissed and worried.
* Russian Federation Nuclear Submarines surface all along the near undefended US Coast Line. Radar detects them but they think it is a glitch until it is reported a few minutes later on TV News that all surfaced Subs were in sight of US Harbors in major cities. The US public gets the message loud and clear.
* Russia goes publicly to its highest defense condition then announces that they won't let Canada's massive resources fall solely to American hands. China makes a similar declaration.
* US backs down in return for their hostages and negotiates a sweet oil deal. Everyone except the US's ego all live happily ever after.

Good book.

THEY DON'T PLAN ON RETURNING.

First season would best season, same four people having to deal with each other every day. You all know what I'm talking about, getting that roommate that you just cant stand after a few months. Now imagine that and living in what equates to a trailer and you cant move out.

Do you smell what the Lock's cooking?

You know those eating contests on reality TV like eating worms and jellyfish...

If something happens to their food supply the eating contests would get a lot more interesting.

too far from the sun. the lack of ozone is actually why it's cold there. ever notice that during winter, it's warmer when it's cloudy? that's because there's something in the way to prevent the heat from just radiating into space (not sure how you can radiate into a vacuum, but I've seen it to be true).

yeah, canada has too many friends for anyone to successfully annex canada without burning so many bridges that it would hurt them more than they would gain by controlling the land.

Men come from Mars and women from Venus, so what?

Anyway, in the early 90s, cars would hover in year 2000, fueled with garbage from the trash can, so Mars base in 10 years... yeah... right, we're still stuck on the asphalt and sucking petrol here.

At the risk of being redundant: no, we're not going to have a colony on Mars by 2023.

The simple fact of the matter is that doing this is hard. Like, really hard. I'm quite sure it can be done, and eventually *will* be done, but not in 10 or 11 years. To quote Rob Manning from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory:

"There’s no comfort in the statistics for missions to Mars. To date over 60% of the missions have failed. The scientists and engineers of these undertakings use phrases like “Six Minutes of Terror,” and “The Great Galactic Ghoul” to illustrate their experiences, evidence of the anxiety that’s evoked by sending a robotic spacecraft to Mars — even among those who have devoted their careers to the task. But mention sending a human mission to land on the Red Planet, with payloads several factors larger than an unmanned spacecraft and the trepidation among that same group grows even larger. Why?

Nobody knows how to do it."

(source)

There are hundreds of other problems that haven't yet been solved: how will you deal with the radiation and solar storms (as Mars has a very weak magnetosphere)? How will you provide the inhabitants of such a colony with adequate air, water and food? What will be your energy source? How will you deal with the health problems associated with living in non-earthly conditions (particularly, lower gravity)? Some of these problems we have a general idea of how to solve them, others we even know how to solve in laboratory X under conditions Y and Z, but all of this is still a long shot from actually being able to build such a colony on Mars.

I probably wouldn't mind going to mars, much further away from the sun means that my sun glasses might actually be useful. I'm in canada, and it's still painfully bright out.
