Relapse: Portable POSes

Alright, I had a relapse on this idea, so I'm linking it here for new ideas, as my brain is spent:

Original Post

Some ideas I didn't make clear last time (One of the responders mentioned there weren't enough cons to make the old POS worthwhile):

  • Non-cloakable: None of the ideas mentioned here are cloakable. This was not explicitly stated last go-round, but intended. P

  • No capital production: I believed this was mentioned, but I'll repeat it anyway. These ideas won't be building capitals.

  • Fuel consumption: This was touched on, but I didn't go into detail. In addition to the units with jump drives obviously burning fuel, there will also be jump bridge add-ons with the same need. In addition, all units with jump gate and/or wormhole capability will require fuel to enter their respective interdimensional orifices. Fuel for maintaining anchored/assembled mode is also required, although I may be talked down from that. This applies loosely to both ideas.

Anyway, this is just to check in on any new interest and constructive criticism. Enjoy!

This sounds like a specially fitted supercapital.

There would need to be modules that behave like starbase structures made specifically for this ship

It would take some modification but it wouldn't be unlike flying a carrier and giving people access to your maintenance bay. You would also need to assign your various production and research facilities and most importantly who can fly it.

This might require a few new skills to fly such as starbase jump drive

Deploy as with any of the other reconfiguration modules. Something like an hours time and then functioning in deployed mode until deactivated, also an hour to repack.

Make the flight mode refitable while deployed and the deployed mode refitable while flying. This makes it possible but difficult to reconfigure.

I toyed with an idea like this to get around the 2.0 API publishing info...

A "Hive" ship design that is jump capable - no bridge capability - cannot use gates (way too large). The general idea is something like a Pine cone - with leaves being slot areas. A central style shaft, similar to a current POS but it's the core ship/tower and dependent upon it's company of ships to defend itself - no guns on it.

3 sizes: Small, Medium and Large, just like a POS.

There would be a number of "docking" spots on the ship for other classes of ships to dock up. The tip of the ship would have a spot for a capital class ship to dock for things like freighter access. This would be a central docking ring allowing movement to and from any attached module via the central core.

Small would have spots for... say: 3 battleships, 5 battlecruisers, 5 cruisers and 3 frigates to dock.
A medium: 5 battleships, 8 battlecruisers, 8 cruisers, 5 frigates.
A large would have: 3 capitals, 5 battleships, 6 battlecruisers, 6 cruisers, 3 frigates.

Something along those lines.

Each docking spot could dock a ship or, while anchored as a POS, attach a specific ship-class sized module in it's place. Storage, etc... Here sits a natural limit to what it can and cannot do - only a few slots of relatively small size and no ability to build something of the size that can dock there (so you can't put a large maintenance gig in a BC slot type stunt).

No free dock/undock with all the bells and whistles of a POS's modules. They'd have to be attached and the trade-off would be inability to dock some ships to it.

The overall abilities would be held down so a POS wouldn't become obsolete. It would be a mobile platform so quite a bit more limited but the limits would encompass the ability to do pretty much anything that can be done with a POS - just slower and less efficiently.

Anchoring would require attaching a special module to the engine output that converts its output to a POS class shield - which also requires a fuel like a POS - it could go "reinforced mode". Shielding would only be possible with that module attached and no movement possible when it's not attached.

It would never be able to field anywhere near the module count of a POS nor in the same fashion (offline/online) but it would allow a gang to move the ship around, deploy it as a POS and, if threatened, within say 1 hour, pack up and leave.

Setting it up as a tower would be tricky though taking it down would be much quicker to retain a GTFO factor for smaller groups and there would be some kind of window where it's pretty much defenseless during the setting up conversion process.

Again, just an idea I was playing with along the lines of what you propose. How it would all work out, fueling it while in POS mode, how the defenses would work, mass constraints so it's mobile but not quick, effects of mods vs ships while docked...

By the time I get up in the morning, it will be taken, just watch. P

@Pidgeon, yes that's the gist of it. I like the variable refit idea, that's a definite include, at least for the train units. Since the second idea is completely modular, I don't think it's as feasible, since it just depends on who checks their mail. Lol I also had new skills in mind, quite a few, in fact. Straight

@Mocam, that sounds like a good simplified version, I kind of like it, if nothing else, it could be a bridging tech... P

Reminds me of the new mothership idea from one of my fellow shipwrights.

@Mocam

I think you may be envisioning something akin to this, only in a non-stationary configuration.

And by the way, keep the Dead Horse flogged.
