Oh holy Terra, not this again...

Look, while this is technically true, a point can be made that it is not due to the game itself, but rather to a generally growing gamer population. The sheer number of gamers went up considerably in the last decade, which would easily account for EVE's growth.

Also, while CCP very much likes to say they're reaching "record numbers", when that record is 400k people that's hardly earth-shattering. Some MMOs are being called a failure with twice that many subs (see SWTOR), and other games are still boasting 10 million paid subscribers (see WoW, after 8 years). Only we don't call EVE a failure, we call it a "niche game", that's better isn't it?

And finally, consider how many of those 400k people are paid subscribers. As in, people who fork over $15/mo. Not that many. Considering that 60% of EVE's players have 2 or more accounts (last time I saw a poll was Sept 2011 I think), half of these 400k are PLEXed alt accounts. In other words, EVE's actual player population is under 200k.

Last but not least, consider that EVE has been incredibly, miraculously, ludicrously lucky in that it had ZERO competition throughout its existence. That's right, there hasn't been a single sci-fi spaceship MMO released in the past decade. I'm not counting multiplayer games like Dark Prophecy, as they're not really MMOs. Had EVE had the kind of competition that permeates the fantasy RPG genre, I think it would have been slaughtered ages ago.

Bottom line, I'm sorry, but after 9 years this does not suggest "please continue to do what you were doing" to me.

You're comparing EvE's sub numbers to Star Wars, which has the backing of what may be the most popular franchise in History, and WoW which is run by the Midas of Games, Blizzard.

Way to make strong comparison.

What's that you say? None of them?

Not to mention that TOR is bleeding subs so fast that they can barely close servers fast enough to keep populations up.

Also, bonus, WoW hasn't actually kept growing every year. It's had years with fewer players than the year before. EvE hasn't.

It would be interesting to see what would happen to the subscription numbers if plex was removed as a way to pay for subs, that may clear up the alt account numbers to a large extent.

Not whining about them. Just ganking them.

The thing I don't like is the constant whining to make HS/EvE/Whatever Safe. That's a direct threat to a game that I really like, because I think CCP might be just stupid enough to listen to it.

But but to the miner, carebear, builder you are more of a direct threat to THEIR game. Cant you see that? There are many professions in eve, if it wasnt for the miners and the builders you wouldntr have ships to pvp in. Cant you see that?

No, not a threat to their game. It's part of this game.

And what makes you think these mystic "pvpers" couldn't build ships?

Perhaps you need to learn how to play this game before making such lollidicious claims.

If you mouseover the graphs it shows the date that the data corresponds to. You can see a clear seasonal cycling of users, and Eve has more concurrent users online during the winter than it does in the summer.

Yep, I can. But shooting people is never a threat to a game about the conflicts that occur when people compete. That's why I didn't say they're a threat to my game. They're a threat to the game. Where they can do whatever they want. and so can everyone else.

Miners don't seem to understand that the "so can everyone else" part means that your activities can be disrupted by other players.

There was this thing called Incarna at the end of Last summer. It was kind of a big deal. Maybe you've heard of it.

Point to a year where there were fewer people on at the end than at the beginning.
