What are cosmic anomalies "centered" around?

Question regarding cosmic anomalies - I'm running some of the higher level sites with a couple high-dps setups with no drone bays, with logi support. This works awesome if the warp-in actually warps me to where I am expecting to be - sometimes it works and other times it doesn't. Are the anomalies "centered" around a certain object in space, be it an outpost, the sun, planet #1, etc? Sometimes I warp in at 40 and the ships are 40-50km off. Others I warp in at 40 and I land right in the middle of the site with a bunch of frigates on top of me, and a logi that is in-range of being attacked. Any ideas? Thanks.

I understand what you're asking, and there is probably some set alignment for the sites, but I can't tell you what that's in reference to. The only thing I know is that sigs/anoms are centered around celestials (up to 8 AU away I believe, maybe it's 4), if that helps you.

They are oriented with respect to an invisible beacon, with the beacon being what you are actually scanning out. The sensor strength of the beacon determines its base signal strength when scanning.

Long ago the beacons were visible.

Sigs and anoms align with respect to the general axes of the system. That is the cardinal directions that show up when you have your tactical overlay set to show, not in a radial direction relative to the sun. The warp-in-point of those sites is a constant location relative to the site ... and is essentially a beacon that you can only 'see' when you're ongrid.

This, in turn, means that warping to (e.g.) 100km from the site’s warp-in-point will land you at different locations, relative to the content of the site, depending on the direction you warp from. This can be a PITA if you’re checking out a site (such when I set-up ambush bookmarks) in a cloaky. Warping from one direction may be fine, while warping from another direction lands you near something that uncloaks you. It can also be a pain when you want to kite, and warping-to-100km plonks you right in the middle of the sleepers.
You can avoid this by working out the axis of alignment of the sites and where their warp-in-points are … but I’ve not really found that to be worth the effort. After a while you will learn to recognise which sites are troublemakers in this respect and in many cases warping to zero is often the best starting point, even for a cloaky.

Sigs and anoms spawn in the proximity of planets. Anoms within 4AU, most sigs within 8AU, and wormholes seemingly within 10AU. This factoid allows you to employ a variety of workarounds to make your scanning more efficient.

I guess I am almost a 'vet' by now. Hopefully not too bitter and managing to help more than I hinder. I build and sell many things, including large collections of bookmarks.
