A new EVE chronicle, "Speaks and Walks", has been published!

EVE Chronicles are short stories set in the world of EVE, and this chronicle, written by Senior Writer CCP Abraxas, deals with the DUST soldiers and the problems that they are beginning to experience as part of the EVE universe. Like all other recent fictional material, it is available through the official Chronicle Portal.

In addition, CCP has begun an ebook initiative where new chronicles will be made available in DRM-free .epub and .mobi formats for all those who prefer to do their reading on portable devices. "Speaks and Walks" may be downloaded here as an epub and here as mobi (for Kindle users), and the preceding chronicle, "Inferno", may be found here as epub and here as mobi.

Also, as an extra special bonus, we have made available three older chronicles in audio format. Some of you might have spotted them as parts of special marketing campaigns and one-off initiatives, but they will now have a permanent link here, here and here. Unfortunately we can't comment on whether any more audio chronicles will be created in the future.

Please use this thread for your feedback, which is - as always - most welcome.

Whose voice is it in the audio chronicles? I can guess, but I would like a confirmation.

EDIT: Nevermind. It's mentioned at the end.

I think the first 3 are a normal soldier slow devolving under the stress of war, and the last is that soldier modified to be a Dust 514 soldier.

So close Smile

First one is a proud, perfect & patriotic Dust soldier, doing his duty with no knowledge of what exactly they put into his brain.

The second and third are the same soldier having gone through war for one of the factions and becoming more and more disenfranchised with the battles they have fought. They're also starting to lose their sense of identity after dying so many times.

The last one is when they have broken free and deserted, and become a mercenary, beholden to no one but themselves.

Nice one!
For some reason it reminds me a bit of a short story I wrote last year, but that's probably just ego.P
You didn't read Belonging, did you?

Edit 2: Why isn't it on the Dust site as well?

So it's the same guy devolving and going free, right? So the titlte is "speaks and walks" as in "HE speaks and walks" not "Some generic ways to sepak and some generic ways to walk"...

I was a bit confused on the fragments being of different ways to be a soldier.

They are all the same guy, but the first 3 are that soldier slowly going insane through all the battles he is participating in, made worse by the fact that he is dying multiple times in each battle and having his conciousness transferred to another version of himself each time. Like the other guy said, he is slowly losing his sense of indentity.

The 4th one is him after deserting from his faction and becoming a mercenary. He is still doing the same thing, but not mindlessly for a paticular faction with nothing tangible for him to hold onto to keep his sanity. This time around, he is motivated by something solid, something more then an ideal, and it keeps his spirits up.

Already has (in a way). Didn't you see them in the lead up to Inferno?

Why's it have to be either-or?

The title's actually from the Psalms. Check the full Psalm 15 and you may be enlightened. Or not. Meditating may also help with that bit. Smile

And I'm glad that people correctly guessed what was going on. We're trying to move away from having the chronicles be too obtuse. I really wanted to experiment with ... I suppose I'd call it anaphora, rather than anything else - the repetition and rearrangement of phrases. I tried to keep the story fairly straightforward and clear so it wouldn't get in the way.

I like it, I like it allot. It talks about all the points that a dust soldier must face. The alien tech in his head, the way he probably was "drafted" for project like this even if he did volunteer under falls pretenses and used by the powers that be. The endless slaughter and death they must face and what that does to a man psyche.

Either its about different soldiers or the same one, But I think all of them eventually would have to become like the last one if they don't want to end up like the third one.

Except offcourse Amarr Templars, who are loved by God and the Empress and need only this love to sustain themselves in their duty. Forever.

Well, it wasn't that hard. After reading the first 2 sections, and noticing there were four, I thought each might be about a Dust soldier from a different faction (the first being the Amarr), but after reading them all it was quite obvious I was wrong.
(Though, if I had to choose, they would be Amarr, Minnie, Caldari, Gallente. P)

Interesting question:
Which soldier is most brain washed? The first three who battle the implant until they essentially go insane, or the one who is happy with it?

Obviously a technology where the host doesn't fight the implant (and is actually appreciative of it) is better than one where the implant has to force his every move. But it doesn't mean such a technology is any less of a brain wash :)

I think it's more a realization of just that. This soldier at first was completely brain washed into thinking this technology was great. As time passed he began to see how it actually wasn't and was more of curse. I think the last section was more of an acceptance of "this is my life now" then "yay technology is awesome!". He was free because he understood that he is cursed, it uplifted him to do what he believed would be right. To use his weapons in a just way instead of using it in a mindless bloodbath of a war.

Of course, I think this chronicle would only cover a portion of Dust soldiers though. I'm sure some will be just as ruthless and merciless as many capsuleers. I'm also sure some will follow their race's flag to hell and back in a never ending cycle.
