It's a game where 90% of the ships have guns...

Requiring someone to actually LEARN to drive before getting behind the wheel, while a good idea, doesn't stop the average moron from jumping in there anyway. Requiring someone to LEARN to play EveO before doing whatever they want to do ALSO doesn't stop the average moron from doing it anyway (ie, taking from a can that doesn't belong to you).

As for why someone sits there just WAITING, who knows. Ask the morons who camp gates or stations. Nobody ever said only smart people play this game.

And I like how people defend it saying, "it's legal." well yes, but being a d-bag is still being a d-bag even if it's allowed.

And being a jerk on the internet because your a loser in real life and want to grief others to make yourself feel better still makes you pathetic.

I think it is lame but live and let live.

I think self-righteous people are bigger d-bags.

I see not requiring the annoyance of others in order to achieve personal enjoyment as being a half way decent human, nothing spectacular or outlandish. Given the chance to be an arse-hat for no real reason some people will always jump at the chance, I guess I've just never understood that need.

Generally those who bully in online games are those who are pushed around in real life and want to feel control and push others around.

I prefer pvp in games where skill wins not picking on the new player.

Is it a silly, idiotic thing do do? Yes.

Is it legal within the rules of the game? Yes.

Should it be stopped? No.

While it is obviously just a means to troll and bully noobs, it inadvertently serves a purpose. It teaches any player that falls for it the lesson that anywhere you go in EvE, there is likely someone looking to kill you by some means for some reason, and the reason doesn't really matter, so learn the means, and adapt.

That is the challenge of EvE, and it is the sort of challenge that greatly appeals to me. Even if older players have an advantage, it is not an insurmountable advantage, and its more significant aspect isn't SP or ISK, but knowledge of the means by which those two assets can and should be used to your advantage.

Can flipping can be a hard lesson to learn, so it's better that the newbies learn early when their ship with fittings is worth less than 1M, than when they're running around in a tech3 cruiser or whatever.

Bob is always present, watching you traverse space accessable only though wormholes. He is the constant reminder that there is always someone watching you, waiting for your moment of weakness to appear and claim his toll for collecting the bounty of his realm.

Hey look! Another trope of these threads! Right up there with "you're a loser in real life if you don't play nice" and "anyone who isn't nice in game is a sociopath" we also get to read "if you play more games than I do, you never go outside!"

Oh internet, you so predictable.

I do occasionally engage in can baiting. I don't do it with a sniper Nado watching a "free ammo" can on an undock, I do it by dropping a can of ore or making a few rat wrecks somewhere and idling under cloak to see if anyone gets greedy. It's not a favorite past-time, I usually do it while I'm waiting on something to happen or getting locates on real targets.

I usually just ignore the cans I see around gates or stations, but if you have the time and want to counter grief them it isn't hard, just get in a fast warping ship like a shuttle, usually the can doesn't contain a whole lot of stuff, often it will fit in the 10m3 of a shuttle. Open the can align with a safe spot or celestial, he won't shoot till you take something, because frankly his tier 3 BC isn't cheap and he'd loose it to concord if he shot before you looted. Grab the loot and warp. If you empty the can then its gone and he'll have to come back to the gate or station to put out another one if he wants to continue, if not wait till your GCC is over and do it again.

You act like the person STEALING from the can in the first place is the victim, despite the fact they have multiple warnings they have to click through. In fact, most time people get scammed is because they let their GREED get in the way of their common sense and pay the price for it, then try to act like their the victim and people should feel sorry for them, when they're just as morally defunct as the scammer. The only difference is that the scammer understands the game mechanics better. People are so offended by the thought that people might be out there wanting to blow up their ship in any way possible, when the reality is, if you removed ganking and griefing from EVE, everyone would just amass tons of wealth, get a hangar full of sweet ships (gear) and then quit the game because theres nothing left to do. And don't say they would all go to null once they've reached that so-called endgame, because not everyone wants to go to null.

Sure you feel violated when bad things happen to you for being stupid or greedy and you get punished, but the fact that your time in game is rewarded with depth and understanding of gameplay mechanics rather than just grinding for "gear" is what keeps people in game for more than a few months or a year.

I'm not really sure how somebody sitting still for hours and killing uninformed random thieves constitutes griefing.
You could always try to out ship them.

Say what?

The reason why is simply that some people will just as soon spit/punch you in the face as shake your hand (ie. socio-paths) .. since Eve provides them with an outlet that doesn't get them committed for psych evaluation those "special" (said with a lisp) kind of people naturally gravitate towards it, yielding the well above average percentage of straight-jacket ready individuals.

Post modern logic my ass Big smile

Most people are quite capable of distinguishing fantasy and reality. Those that cannot protest Harry Potter books, attempt to sue Rockstar over GTA, and whine about sociopaths kicking over their virtual sandcastle.

This is not griefing, it is one of the 'aggro tutorials'. A free service rendered by players.
