Thanks for finally stepping up and taking responsibility. Being able to admit some mistakes were made and repeatedly made is important.

Quote:
I was wrong and I admit it.
Is the most encouraging quote in a long time.

However, I am still not convinced that you realize fully where the mistakes were made. I'll take my time to point out what concerns remain even after this blog.

Quote:
hired experienced industry professionals for key leadership positions.

This worries me. How will you make sure those "experienced industry professionals" will maintain the uniqueness of EVE? Or is this a guarantee that we will end up with more managers completely out of touch with the community and the game they are actually creating?

Quote:
The fact we didn’t leverage their [the incarna teams'] achievement more effectively is my fault.
Could you elaborate on that? What mistake was made? Was too much pressure put on the teams or were too few resources allocated to EVE?

[continued in another post due to forums, and yes they bloody ate my first post Cry ]

From a strategic perspective, we had to take these first steps [regarding virtual goods] because monthly subscriptions are increasingly becoming a thing of the past.
I'm still not convinced micro transactions are the way forward for EVE and it really saddens me to see EVE move in that direction. In the end what seems at play here is EVE being able to make CCP more money. To me -- I realize this is fully subjective, but I bet I am not the only one to feel this way-- MTs really break the level playing field -- whether it is vanity or not. Not to mention that the NEX store is a huge immersion breaker. In short: I am still not convinced this move is to create a better player experience. I see it as a way for CCP to make more money at my expense while delivering as little as possible in return.

Quote:
more accessible to general audiences
So you gained a niche market with EVE and now want to expand. Am I the only one getting the feeling that incarna is an entirely seperate game from EVE as a result? Maybe it could have been released as such (similar to DUST). What I would have liked though is for incarna not to be a wholly seperate game, but fully in the spirit of EVE (and as a result without MTs for instance Twisted ).

Quote:
Part of what led us down this path is the fact we have not communicated well.
This is a recurring theme, but in the end your biggest failure lies in achieving nothing towards unleashing EVE's full FIS potential for years now.

Quote:
I fervently believe with all my heart that we’ve not even scratched the surface of EVE’s potential. My personal failing is not reconciling that passion with pragmatism.
Those are pretty words. However, CCP have invested tremendously in the development of other games. I doubt these investments were all made purely in the interest of EVE. I believe your blog fails to fully acknowledge that even though it hints at it.

That said, I have more hope now than I did before the blog, so in any case it's a step in the right direction. Many thanks again to the CSM for defending the player's vision of EVE.

7 or 8 years plus change and I'm still playing this game. Nearly half my life, and EVE's so common everyone in my family except my mother plays it to some degree.

I am pleased to see this declaration, and I think results will bring about a reinvigorated faith in the company. Not everything will go perfectly, but acknowledging that clearly for everyone to see is a big thing.

One of three account expired last week and I put it on the shelf. In the next 7 days another will expire and it also is going on the shelf. The last of the three accounts expires towards the end of the month, and it too shall go on the shelf.

You have proven quite strongly that what you say is not what I should be concerned with, but with what you do. Rewarding more PR wordsmithing , smoke and mirrors with my subscription money is NOT what is going to occur.

I'll be rewarding another developer of a sci-fi MMO that launches soon with my subscription money for the next year or two. Though I doubt it, maybe by that time your actions will reflect the shallow promises made recently. At that time I will evaluate if CCP deserves to be rewarded with my support and subscription.

I honestly don't expect that I'll be back though, I still get the overall impression that you are still vastly disconnected from what your playerbase wants to see occur.

Maybe it's my age-induced cynicism playing up again, because as I was applauding what appeared to be a very brave and welcome post, I started to wonder what might have moved him to write it.

Could it have been, for example, that someone had just dropped a report on his desk, showing that significantly more subscriptions were being allowed to expire than were being renewed? If that was the case, the blog is a very astute business move, albeit one of a limited range of options open to him.

Maybe I should stop "looking a gift horse in the mouth" and just see how it goes.

If he is true to his word, everybody wins. :)

Bravo Hilmar , for finally stepping up to the plate !

As a capsuleer who has been here through almost 4 yrs.of EVElife contributing to all CCP's paychecks literally. I pray that all your well placed words will carry Weight & Consequence , and that the CSM who by being voted to lead us all as our collective voice to CCP , will have their Opinions and Suggestions Carry real weight & Consequence within the CCP ranks as well. I hope for real and sufficient change. Who needs all the sparkly fluff if the core product has become flawed ? Not me ! Evil

Thank you Hilmar. I have been in your position as the CEO of a software company that disappointed its customers and I know how hard what you have just done is, but it was the right thing to do.

To turn your words into action is going to need CCP to re-connect with the player base in all of its many forms; from the nullsec pirates all the way to the Empire space carebears. Even new players need to be considered so that they don't feel like they are the last ones to arrive at the party after everyone else has got drunk and eaten all the food.

The CSM is a good idea but I would like to see it represent the entire Eve community a little more proactively, for example CSM members could represent certain constituencies and hold town-hall meeting or surgeries to get ideas and feedback. Similarly, CCP could introduce more democracy into the decisions about what needs to be improved and which development requests get prioritized.

Does CCP have any employees who have good pattern-recognition skills that can mine the immense amount of data that Eve must generate to see where things can be improved. For example, which ships are flown the least, and why? How many players rarely venture into lowsec and what could be done to encourage them? Which ships are overpowered and what ideas could be introduced to counter them?

I'm sure that you get the idea!

I hope we can help you make your vision for Eve happen.

"In short, my zeal for pushing EVE to her true potential made me lose sight of doing the simple things right."

Well, that's just a crock of ****.

"But we found a way because EVE is something unique in the world."

That's a helluva non sequitur.

"Removing ship spinning was a negligent oversight ..."

That's just not true. It was a deliberate, conscious decision that faced lots of vocal opposition well before it was executed.

"Let me be blunt: Unless the MMO business changes radically, our virtual goods strategy for EVE Online will remain limited in scope and focus on vanity items, or as we said after the CSM visit this summer: The investment of money in EVE should not give you an unfair advantage over the investment of time."

Let me be blunt: Get rid of aurum. No MT other than PLEX. Weasel-wording about 'unfair' advantages isn't any more palatable now than it was 3 months ago.

"... we had to take these first steps because monthly subscriptions are increasingly becoming a thing of the past."

More like monthly subscriptions increasing has become a thing of the past.

"If we don’t evolve our technology, our game design and our revenue model, then we risk obsolescence, and we just can’t allow that to happen to EVE or to our community."

Bullshit. Your old revenue model works just fine. That's why EVE is your 'golden goose.'

"EVE will be more personal, and thus more accessible to general audiences."

Do not want.

"In 2007, we faced a similar crisis of confidence, and it resulted in the creation of the CSM. We’re a better company because of it."

The CSM is a joke and other than CSM V always has been. Why are you still pretending otherwise?

"I need to do a better job of pursuing that vision without diluting or marginalizing the things that are great—or could be great—about the game right now."

No, jefe, not 'without diluting'. You need to focus on excellence, like we've been telling you for years.

Let me summarize for everyone: Hi I'm Hlimar I'm sorry we are not making as much money as I had projected. I understand that the eve player base is not happy with the direction I am taking the game. I think they are dumb and will continue in the direction that I have been going and will try and reword it in as many ways as necessary until they accept my vision.

It is just crazy how out of touch Hilmar seems to be. This only confirms what I have said from day 1 of Incarna. There is no hope for Eve as long as Hilmar is still there.

Eve has attracted the kind of people that do not enjoy the game experience that comes from being marketed to. I my self left WoW when I was paying $15 per month to be marketed to. I specifically chose a game that only made money on my monthly fees. Micro-transactions change the game experience. In this day and age when people are running away from materialism and waking up to the soul sucking that perpetual marketing is you will see the number of people looking for a game like what eve used to be growing.

Even with the mass exodus that has resulted from your failures all that you have to say is maybe I did not explain myself well enough? Clueless is all I can say. clueless.

Thanks for that blog Hilmar: because it gives hope and perspective again to us the players and also because it certainly has been hard for you to travel the path of changing your mind and admitting mistakes as you do.

I don't know if all you dream are possible but at least I feel like I'm willing to take and try the journey with CCP again !

I must confess I shed a manly tear too Lol

Don't worry too much over you mistake Hilmar. As a CEO you must be confident about your decisions, and sometimes you just get too confident. The real mistake would have been to continue on the wrong path because of misplaced pride or stubbornness. You didn't, and for that you deserve all our respect.

Just of word of advice: We players are simple folk. Unlike woman, you have to give us what we ask, not what you think we want P

Nice move!
My opinion stays the same: The move is on you. Don't screw things up in the future and try to actually improve your game. Reearn the trust of your playerbase.
