Are Rails versatile?

So, I currently have a caldari character who is trained almost exclusively for missiles (Drake/Tengu). However, I was thinking about training for a Rokh, and that means hybrid turrets.

So, I'm basically wondering how versatile hybrid turrets are; particularly railguns. I don't want to train not only rail guns, but also all the gunnery support skills, just for one ship. Are there any other ships that make extensive use out of rail guns? In particular, I like to fly assault frigates out solo...is there a hybrid fit for those?

All Gallente and half Caldari ships use Hybrids. You can use Railguns for Battleship PvE, for Rokh-fleets, for Frigate PvP and for Naga/Talos sniperfits. Just don't use medium Rails, they're crap.
Everything else that is Gallente/Caldari and doesn't use Missiles works well with Hybrids.

I'm not sure if 'versatile' and 'Hybrids' can be used in the same sentance.
Blasters are only good for short range and need to be on a ship that can close that range fairly fast. Once you get there... Blasters kick ass.
Rails are for snipeing/kiteing, and they do less damage in most cases. Projectiles have better Alpha strike by far.

You can't go wrong by doing all the support skills. They help your Hybrids, and any other gun you might use later.

I have Rokh...It never gets used. Shield BS PvP is rare indeed. My Rokh is fitted with Torps n Neuts btw. The Torps have better range AND do more damage.

If I want to use Blasters, I generally undock a Mega or Astarte. The DPS is full of Shock and Awe.

The only ship I consistently use rails on is a plexing Proteus, where I kite big spawns until I get them under control. Solo stuff.

When I fit Ferox's, I put Projectiles on them. Many ppl do the same with Rokh's, since there is no damage bonus anyway.

This is kind of random thoughts and unorganized comments. Hope it helps a bit.

Rokh are good gas mining ships, and okay at mining but not great at PVE. Raven or Tengu are the way to go for missions withCaldari.

Rokh is actually pretty bad. Naga will make good use of your rail skills though, as will the Harpy (which is now quite nasty with either blasters or rails). I wouldn't be all that surprised to find that Caldari hybrid boats get really, really nice after rebalancing hits, including the much-maligned Ferox. If I were in a position to choose now, I'd train gunnery up on that bet; even if it doesn't pan out it will make hopping into Gallente hybrid boats trivial and open up the possibility of further crosstraining.

^ Nonsense. The rokh can be great in the right situation. With rails and Javelin or Navy AM it projects damage nicely.

Sniper fits with rails are pretty nice in certain situations.

A very cheap Naga with good skills and 425mm II's can ruin the day of many small ships at 249Km and it's fun. You can also hit at around 100Km in optimal.

While the Alpha is underwhelming compared to that of a typical Tornado, the DPS is nice and the damage projection is excellent.

With all this nonsense, what I really, really mean is that the Naga is gorgeous and I'd rather be useless inside one and die horribly against a T1 frigate that manages to get close after one volley, than be caught flying the hideous and repulsive Tornado and its stupidly useful 10K Alpha which is like the righteous and holy Finger of God if you catch them with no transversal.

Meh.

What was this thread about, again?

Rails get more range than Artillery, but Artillery get a lot more alpha, so honestly, dock the Naga, fly the Tornado. Moving on down, Medium rails are garbage. Never use them. Moving on down again, rail 'ceptors are not that uncommon, and have the advantage occasionally.

Truthfully, the autocannon does everything rails/hybrids do better except damage at extremely (2.5 kms) close range. Most winmatar ships have great tracking even without bonuses.

But, if you insist on the following the trail of tears to Large Hybrids V, train Battlecruisers V, and Minmatar Cruisers to V. The Vigilant and the Talos are two absolutely awesome cruisers.

I fly the Naga because of its looks and the extreme range which I put to good use most of the time.

I CAN fly a Tornado, I just don't feel like it.

On medium gun platforms, I favor Autocannons because Winmatar. Here comes a Drake, let's load EMP and hit it comfortably 20Km away, that kind of thing. I love blasters, but I got tired of slowboating to 2 or 5Km with a Brutix. Most of the time engagements are over before I could do anything, while the Hurricane gets me in killmails every now and then.
