Yeah, the quasi-scientific theory is that in December 2012 the Earth's magnetic axis will exactly align with the Milky Way galaxy's overall magnetic axis. That's because of the Earth's precession. The axis doesn't spin in one spot, it makes a loop every 26,000 years. The axis will reach a point in the loop aligning with the galaxy's magnetic poles.

Meanwhile, the solar system has its own magnetic axis, and the solar system is moving within the Milky Way. And the Milky Way is rotating. So the Earth is reaching a point where all of these magnetic axes will line up, a once in a million years event or something. In December 2012, these fields that have gradually been lining up will hit their ultimate alignment. The way two magnets suddenly snap together, when you gradually bring them close together-- that's what will happen when all the fields align. A sudden snapping into place of all the forces. The Earth's magnetic field will shift all over the place, which will disrupt the equilibrium of forces in the Earth's core, mantle, crust and atmosphere. So earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, storms, etc., etc.

That's the theory I read at least. I don't know how it checks out with the scientific community. I don't even know if they can detect or measure the overall magnetic fields of the solar system or the Milky Way.

Ok, ignoring the god-awful grammer, but sorry - saying that "Something is going to change" is just about the safest freaking prediction one can make seeing as the only freaking thing in life that does not change is change itself.

Picky = Worlds real big, really really big. Very hard to end.

Fact = Humans are weird - every capacity to make a utopia but dont. Crises everywhere apparently, lots of bad stuff to worry about and shoot your neighbour in the face for.

Mayans = made a calendar, and continued it to a long long long time ahead - got bored and went and did something else, like feed themselves.

Huh? The part about the Mayan calendar and Cortes is a recorded historical fact, not some recent 2012 internet hoodoo. You can look it up. Rationality means forming your opinions based on facts and evidence. Discounting facts because they don't fit into your personal world view-- that's not rationality.

So I guess while he was at it he went ahead and destroyed Pisarro. A pre-emptive strike, so that Pisarro couldn't destroy the Incas like the history books say.

Anyway, nitpicking aside. True, the Mayan peak was over by the time Cortes arrived. It was the Aztec cities and loot he was targetting. But the Aztecs had borrowed culture from the Maya and Toltecs, kind of like Europe borrowed from Rome. And according to this anthropologist David Carrasco, the Mayan calendar was still being watched by the Aztecs and other people in Central America. Thus the mistaking Cortes for Quetzalcoatl.

Anyway, it's all good. I'm not sold on this 2012 Mayan calendar thing myself, was just throwing a factoid out there. It was published on paper in a textbook-type book. It has to be right, right?

I don't know how the Romans in the 5th century knew that the world would end on that day, but clearly they never planned for it, so that must be when the world ends.
