EVE is not Easy Mode

If you're new to EVE Online, you should read the following blog post by The Mittani. Do not be a drooling easymoder ... join EVE with the goal to become one of the hard.

http://www.tentonhammer.com/eve/spymaster/79

A snippet from the blog post:
Quote:
It is undeniable: games as a whole are getting easier each year, with more handholding, simpler control schemes, extended tutorials, and a relentless drive to seize the money of even the most drooling incompetent. Simultaneously, games are getting more immersive and addictive, with the psychological feedback loops first seen in MUDs exploding into the MMO industry with Everquest and then being refined into their most destructive forms by both Blizzard and Zynga. What does a hobby with ever-increasing levels of addiction, ease, and immersion for its users create? A sense of entitlement - an entitlement that is a threat to every ‘hard’ game out there, but especially to EVE Online.

Despite CCP’s explicit marketing of EVE as a harsh universe full of mayhem and murder, despite Hulkageddons, despite the Great War, and despite the Burning of Jita, there is a silent, ignorant herd of players who genuinely believe that EVE is just like the other MMOs on the market - the PvP-optional, hand-holding MMOs who will pat you on the back, wipe away your tears, and give you a 30-second respawn with no consequences. When these people discover that EVE is not World of Warcraft (WoW), they rush to the forums and loudly bleat out their indignation and horror at encountering loss or danger.

Since the dawn of Jita time it's been that way....there might be more of them, but it's always been that way.

Well, that article is quite true. Quick look at most popular sections of these forums proves huge wave of rage, entitlement and complete lack of understanding that this game simply is different. No instances of safe 1v1, no arenas, no magic bullets damaging only to the hull.

You want 1v1 - find it, learn how to lure opponents, how to divide their forces at gates for example. Or get your corp together and organize big (or small) dueling tournament.

You want to test new fit - get your corpie and agree on "to the hull" part.

Cooperate with others and interact with others.

You like mining, go ahead mine all you want. You like missions - do them all. But those activities are not performed in your private bubble full of flowers and rainbows, there are other players for whom you may be potential victim, source of shiny mods, epic killmail or just nobody interesting. And since you are allowed to do whatever and whenever you want - so are they.

I hope Eve will stay hardcore but at the same time I hope it will improve in UI aspect, maybe in variety of PVE part, maybe we get new interesting modules and ships and toys in general. But all those things shouldn't change a core and very unique value of Eve - you wanna fu*k up somebody's day - just choose your tool and do it!

While the article is quite true, the irony is that it's written by someone whose version of playing eve is to hardly log in and read scripts to a herd of drooling players. In their own words, they are a noob training corp, with handholding, tutorials, etc., which indeed leads to the mentioned sense of entitlement.

I have been playing this game since almost release. While I have "lapsed" quite a few times over the years I always end up coming back. The reason being that no matter how long I am away the game remains true to its original ethos. While there has been "streamlining" there has never been an overall dumbing down of the game. I love this game and I nourish myself on the tears of WoWbies who come, posture and end up leaving defeated.

Jita has always been full of scammers.

And it is because of there freedom to scam that we are all free capsuleers Blink

I dont know. I dont want wowbies to leave defeated, I want them to see the light. Once they embrace the sandbox they will never go back to the complete quest receive bacon style of doing things.

Which is certainly available in eve but is only a means to a greater end nothing more.

For the first time ever, I agree with the Mittani.
Great article and it's something that I've thought about for years, of games in general.

Good luck with that. I don't know an MMO out there that hasn't tried to bite the WoW apple. Unfortunately, when developers do bite that apple they find out it's core is a bunch of weirdo manbabies addicted to clicking the same four buttons repetitively for a feeling of accomplishment. Wait till the halfwits from DUST start posting with month old characters who got killed trying to do the uber orbital bombardment thing. If you think wannabe Ogre WoW idiots are bad you've never met a wannabe military COD idiot.

CCP needs to realize EvE pve consists of shooting red crosses in a certain order and that can never change. My first impression here was "Christ I hope the pvp aspects of this game are as good as they say because the pve is terrible". I had a friend who plays a WoWish game download the trial. She logged in and said "oh this is click to move?? nevermind I hate these games". Red crosses and click to move are not good selling points to the WoW or COD crowd. They need a virtual body that always wins so they can forget about their pitiful existence as a looser in the real body.

I don't know if that's true. After all, if they come and try Eve out and thrive, and realise that WoW/CoD are terrible games, isn't that a good thing?

QUOTE STORM!

Kind of my thinking.

Homo Jesus does bring up some pretty valid points. All though the COD/WOW crowd should try eve I believe our actual retention rate of those people will be pretty low for those reasons he mentioned. But hey Id like to think the Cream rises to the surface in that situation.

EVE:
The complexity keeps out the rif raf.

This also means that our Trolls griefers etc. are best trolls griefers, which is why they generate so much press.
