Ok so sometime about a year ago i tried taking a crack at linux; was all well except amd driver for my card at the time just didnt cut it. Now Im back again and something things have changed and things, aswell as getting a brand spanking new computer after 5 years of old one im givving linux a second try for various things one of which of too test out how the proprietary drivers work out.

Anyway what i could use is a simple walk-through of how to get eve to run in linux; to start Ubuntu is probably prefernced but atm on my prototyping hdd im testing out ubuntu 12.04 and linux mint 12; (possibly more well to come but this is all on test hdd).
Good response to the above will go will likely save me lots of time in being able to use this thread as a one stop shop xzy .. well you get what mean.

this op is in two parts/ below for my eve question (piont of this thread) and

second part is just some questions to a communtity why installing linux didnt go smoothly

Now heres what i have done so far to try get eve running on linux =
1. On blank HDD I installed ubuntu 11.10; from here i immeidately upgraded to 12.04 (if wonder why i went this way there is more info below but prob not relevant to the issue of getting eve to work)
2. I opened up the software center and installed wine from there (and i took the download as is = i did not add or remove anything to be installed); this also installed mscorefonts
3. I downloaded the windows eve.exe file
4. I Ran the eve installer with wine
5. I let it do its thing
6. Eve is now installed; the launcher comes up fine
7. Seeing as everything seems to be working great... I click Play
8. Nothing Happens

9. NAO WHAT!?!!??!?

BELOW = IGNORE UNLESS BORED

Irrelvant info to the above issue but this is a linux community so here this goes if somebody is bored and can tell me about this..

HDD History
I am testing out linux on a brand new 500 GB Seagate drive. First pass I tried installing ubuntu 12.04 from flash drive, the install was working until i got some fatal error telling me that the grub file wouldn't install or was corrupted ( i forget now). I proceeded to opt for now continiuing the installation and then just wiping the drive from my main HDD (which for somereason in windows led to it showing a smaller drive afterwards).then i also make a couple partions with easus manager to make room to test different linux os. I try to install 12.04 from the flash drive to find that the flash drive dosnt work anymore and im just left with a blank screen and a white ticker in upper left hand corner. I then try to install Linux Mint 12 KDE 64 bit frrom dvd and this went without a hitch... until i tried rebooting after the install to find that it wouldnt boot (whit ticker again) Then I Take a Ubuntu 11.10 cd which i KNOW will install and use that.. It installs and now the drive will boot- and it also shows the mint os which will now boot. After this I upgraded from the 11.04 to 12.04.

That is the 100% history of this drive barring anything that may have happened over at manufacturer.

basically from that i want to know why ubuntu didnt install the first time and why my ubuntu usb stick dosnt work anymore, whats the grub file all about, and how come linux miont wasnt able to boot on its own before succesful unbuntu installation.

Could someone do this:

Youtube Video - installation of EVE on ubuntu 12.04 LTR

I have just put Ubuntu on my backtop - T60 Lenovo, but it will not run EVE I think, doesn't want to start anyway... but will load up to the launcher. I think it just can't handle shadder v.2.

Anyway, it would be nice if someone could do a installation on this video and then post it up for all to see - maybe we can get a sticky as a intallation tip in this section.

looking at the specs of the laptop it should be able to run. Graphics: ATI X1400 128MB has support for shader model 3. Although as an nvidia user i don't know how good the ATI drivers are.

Since you got to the launcher part my guess would be that you need to take te steps written down in this thread (long read)

It's nice to get more linux tutorials and video tutorials would be nice but what do you need besides the
"type this, type that, get bacon"
Since most of the time a video tutorial would be looking at the progress bar (to be honest, it would be more entertaining than 90% of the stuff you can find on youtube) i'd like to know what the added value would be.

Update:
Just tried launching eve directly from where the .exe is installed and i get this =

It looks like you associated the "exe" extension with an archive manager like zip or Ark.

don't run the eve.exe to play the game.
Simple run path_to_installation/bin/ExeFile.exe
That bypasses the launcher and runs the game directly.

I think I got the same issue - I just reinstalled the whole Ubuntu 12.04 LTR 32-bit on the T60.

I get basically same thing when I tried to launch the launcher.

Do you launch EVE then from the terminal?
"Simple run path_to_installation/bin/ExeFile.exe"

I should reinstall the it and try it again, my curiosity now on the "back-top" is now aroused.

I have the 1951 version that has a GMA950 on the MB, no seperate vidio card. not sure that could do it, been looking for the Linux driver for it, but so far it just registers as "Unknown Graphics" so I guess that is using the default mode until I sort that out.

Be very cool if I could run EVE on this, even if just to play Skill-Queue Online with it - if you have any info on how to get the GMA working - that was the issue I bet, no graphical driver or the launcher probably would have worked.

Your videocard needs to support shader model 3.0 (source) and I'm not sure if the GMA950 support is sufficient for running eve on linux GMA950 only supports shader model 3.0 through software "emulation" (source). I don't think the current drivers in Linux support it, so unless you plan to buy a new computer, your best bet will be to try it in windows.

Can you start the client in a terminal because without error messages, no one can help you.
Run it like this:
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="*msvcrt,*msvcr100,*msvcr80=b,n" wine PATH_TO_EVE/bin/ExeFile.exe

Then if the client doesn't start, copy paste the error you get over here.

Do not click "Play" - after patching close the launcher and run the game again. You should not see the launcher.

So I copy pasted those two commands into the terminal; WINEDLLOVERRIDES="... just give me a new new line idk if im supposed to see something.

When i tried to input the path, wine Home/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/CCP/EVE/bin/ExeFile.exe or wine PATH_TO_EVE/bin/ExeFile.exe

I get

wine: cannot find 'Home/.wine/drive_c/Program'
wine: cannot find 'PATH_TO_EVE/bin/ExeFile.exe'

*Chuckle*

You need to replace "PATH_TO_EVE" with the actual path of where your eve folder is. And, for good measure, wrap the entire filename in double quotes - most likely it contains one or more blank characters, and those need to be escaped.

Try this:

Quote:

WINEDLLOVERRIDES="*msvcrt,*msvcr100,*msvcr80=b,n" wine "C:/Program Files/CCP/EVE/bin/ExeFile.exe"

Single line, a total of four double quotes.

Well that worked! sort of... it now loads the login screen and has a familiar blank EULA iirc i need to copy paste some fonts?

Also loading is rather slow and and the login screen came up it seemed to lock up my computer as it wouldn't respond to my mouse or any keyboard commands
(at least on hdd using linux mint - im testing this out simultaneously on laptop with a vm running ubuntu and on there i was able to ctrl+alt+T sudo xkill; would this be something between ubuntu vs mint or host vs vm?)

Did you install corefonts with winetricks? I read that when installing wine that you also installed mscorefonts, but maybe it's not exactly the same. Normally the corefonts are installed per wine prefix, that's why I'm not sure if installing the mscorefonts like you did is sufficient. At least it doesn't hurt to try.

Define slow because when you load the eve client for the first time after a reboot it can take a couple of minutes, after that it is usually quite fast. Also does you computer really lock up or you're simply looking at an empty EULA because you are missing the corefonts?

If you have a blank EULA, launch this from the shell:
Quote:

winetricks corefonts

Then, you're talking about "vm". I think you should not rely on a virtual machine to run such an hardware intensive application like a 3D game.

Try and run it on bare metal.

Apart from making sure that I've got the extra "vrun"s and "corefonts" I personally found that the launcher would launch and patch normally, however the game would not.

I took what others here have said and created an bash file called "eve.sh" as follows:

Quote:

#!/bin/sh
export LANG=en_US.UTF-8
export LC_ALL=en_US.UTF-8
export WINEDLLOVERRIDES="*msvcr100,*msvcr90,*msvcr80=b,n"
wine explorer /desktop=eve1,1280x800 "C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\bin\ExeFile.exe"

It needs to be made executable and runs from terminal as "./eve.sh"

This way, whenever I need to patch I just run the launcher normally and then shut it donw; don't hit run. When I run eve, I run from terminal where the bash file overrides the specific msvcr files to builtin-native.
