Really, I'm not joking or making fun. What separates the vet pvpers from the newbies is the vets have died so many times, they are able to keep everything in perspective when they fight.

If you don't have any isk, attack people with your rookie ships. Someone killed a tornado with a velator , and here's a velator vs. Oracle movie, same dude. What is better than flying a free ship?

The number one rule of eve is don't fly what you can't afford to lose, so if you fly cheap crap, and die, and you learn cheap lessons. Because you WILL die. Keep your medical clone up to date so you don't lose SP and you're golden.

Exactly what she said. Once you get past the fear of being on the loosing end of an auto cannon, it only gets better.

ALWAYS have a Clone backup to carry ALL your skill points.
Check any medical center in a station to make sure your clone is up to date.

If you get "podded"...you will not have lost skill points Big smile

NEVER EVER buy anything you cannot afford to lose. Pew Pew Happens and sometimes it costs isk.

Investigate Ship Insurance and see if it is worthwhile for you.

Google, use EvE Forums and chat with people to ask questions. DO NOT assume everyone is being nice either. Ignore the trolls and scumbags of EvE...kinda like in RL, just laugh to yourself and move on.

TRY THINGS...don't like mining? No Prob. Try NPC Missions. Try joining a Player run Corporation. Try manufacturing. Try Trade.

Eve is a sandbox and you get to decide what you want to build...or destroy Big smile

Welcome to the most hostile gaming environment you have yet to experience.

There is no true way to be safe in our universe. Even in high security space pilots can "jihad" themselves to destroy what you are flying.

There are already a lot of great tips. Eve University is one I back 100% for new pilots. They have an extensive knowledge base. Almost every resource for anything you could possibly be interested in available to you and a huge number of supporters(including some major null sec or "outlaw space" alliances).

Lastly, you are going to lose ships. What matters is learning from the experience and not repeating the same mistakes.

"Like everyone else you want to learn the way to win. But never to accept the way to lose. To accept defeat — to learn to die — is to be liberated from it. Once you accept, you are free to flow and to harmonize. Fluidity is the way to an empty mind. You must free your ambitious mind and learn the art of dying."

1) If you are running a lvl 4 mission in high sec flying a deadspace fit marauder or faction ship and an 8 to 10 person gang shows up unexpectedly.....you are in trouble. OopsNever, ever fly something you cannot replace. But then again if you play long enough to learn the game with a good corporation, replacing that expensive ship is a - meh, in a month or so I'll have another. Plus you can always go after the pirates or hire someone to go after them for you......Lol.....if they don't scam you.

2) In EVE - scamming, threatening, cheating, extorting, kidnapping, bullying, falling in love, stealing, backstabbing, name calling, lying, exagerating, mud slinging, slandering, hunting down people like animals, murder, ranting, blowing up noobs, griefing, and any other nasty thing I forgot to mention is encouraged by one party or another. Word. Twisted That is what makes this game so addictive!

You can't die in EVE, you are a capsuleer...you are immortal. You can and WILL lose your ship, however, probably many of them. Even then, you'll be in your pod and still have a chance to get away. There is one rule in EVE, update your clone.

Other than that, the galaxy is yours to do with as you wish...if others will let you. Mine, trade, explore, hunt, ambush, steal... ALL are viable paths to fortune. It's true that when you lose your ship, it, its modules, and its cargo are gone. But therein lies the thrill. For is anything truly thrilling if there is nothing to lose? What reward is there without risk? There is one rule in EVE, update your clone.

Nothing compares to that feeling; your pulse racing, your hands shaking as you dance with you opponent, modules overheating, armor blown away, your ship seconds from imploding. There is one rule in EVE, update your clone.

On the other hand, there are many in this galaxy who will happily help you along, for no other reason than that your paths have crossed. It has happened to me many times. EVE is a harsh mistress, but she can be kind as well. Talk to people, ask questions. The responses here on this thread are proof alone...but always update your clone.

You know, everybody says the first rule of Eve is "Don't fly what you can't afford to lose."

While that's tremendous advice, I'd say the first rule of Eve is actually:

Chainsaw Plankton wrote:
blah blah blah...I'd suggest...joining a player corp. Blah Blah blah

Trust is so hard to come by in this game that even the tiniest amount of it becomes extremely valuable. Joining a corp is forming mutual trust with a group (unless you intend to backstab them!), and that trust will often follow you as long as you play the game, or even longer. Just ask some of the people who attended fanfest this year, three or four years after their subscription to the game last expired.

The people make this game, and finding a good group of them should absolutely be your first priority. They'll help you out when you inevitably break the "first rule."

Don't risk everything you have, if you just spent all your isk on one ship and then you go out and lose it in the first 30secs after undock you'll probably quit, play things conservatively and make sure you always have a nest-egg, it takes a bit more time but you won't freak out as much if you lose something.

You'll do fine, no really, just ask anyone in local for advice, try not to trust them much (like don't fleet with them or do anything they say when they're ship's next to yours) but they'll talk to you if you don't let them shoot you.

Shooting isn't always what Eve's about. Sometimes it's about getting shot at, and getting away :) those moments are some of the best.

Hi mate, welcome to New Eden.

I've recently been undertaking a journalistic odyssey (sponsored by Guild Launch) exploring the communities of EVE Online, which might be quite enlightening for a newcomer. My first two Exploring EVE Online articles were as follows:

Fanfest and "The Nation of EVE"
The Rookie's Path & EVE University

I've spent the last month in the Red versus Blue PvP community and will be publishing that article in the next few days.

I'm horrible at this game. Ask anyone.

I lose ships in such interesting ways that my Alliance, Fatal Ascension ordered me to biomass my main
just so I could not fly nice things anymore and save our killboard. I'm not permitted to talk to anyone
outside our alliance as it keeps causing wars, and somewhere out there is a station named 'Highauger's
Horrible Posting' in O1Y, after I published my second set of lectures, right at my damn administration centre.

Their are so many ways to enjoy being terrible at Eve. Here's some stuff I have learned.

-- Highauger's Animated Corpse's 10 top tips to not be noticed failing--

* The 'free stuff' can is never yellow, the guy isn't really quitting eve and giving away all his stuff,
always remember, words are no substitute for a headbut, and you don't know where he lives

* If you do get podded. Immediately let go of the keyboard put your hands on your head count to ten,
then update your clone. This is the only truly important thing to remember. Do this, then go beserk

* Always put expensive things in cargo containers before going anywhere with it. Greedy little fishys
will blow you up for your shiny, even in sunny little empire, hell especially in empire

* In fleet. Have the fleet window open, 'history tab' and ensure the 'need shield' and 'need armor' buttons are identified.
Listen to the Fleet Commander, ask questions using fingers not lips in fleets

* The d-scan is you best friend, like a lantern. The earlier you get familiar with this tool the better a pilot and an
asset to any group you will become

* In fleet. Align does not mean warp, warp does not mean jump, a lemming is someone who fails to grasp this

* Read all the print on the contract twice, then count all the zeros again

* Don't fly what your mates can't afford you to lose

* 'Sisi' The test server is free for Eve subscribers, it takes all the pressure out of pvp and allows practice without
the loss of real assets. It's also ahead of the game, you get to bug detect and try stuff out early, and it's awesome

* Really throw yourself into your play. Once you get into it, Eve Online is fundimentally profound, the scope and
depth of the gameplay are breathtaking. The game gets bigger by a factor of itself every time you think you have it.
In self, corp, alliance, coalition; in ship, squad, wing, fleet, force; in station, moon, planet, system, constillation, region,
'north and south,' Galaxy. In the relationships you make, in the metagame, in how you see the gameplay

For me, more than anything it is about tonight. Tonight is our Alliance meeting. People who may never meet, from all
countries and cultures will come together, often as friends and discuss the future of an Alliance many of us have fought
together to grow over years. The choices we make, unlike any other game will effect everyone who plays. That's the
brilliance of the one galaxy concept. Eve is at the edge of technology, as an mmog it is at the top of the table,
which should make it up in the high corner somewhere

yes there it is, up there on the right by the pickle

Their marketing department is going full steam ahead with all the "arrow with 20 megaton warhead" advertisements to capture more "new" players. Now the "new" players are bombarding customer service with harassment and ship replacement requests because they don't understand the rules or care to learn them?

1 - There is no respawn button. There is no XP for killing critters. If you see a big flash and find yourself in a little egg looking thing you didn't level up...you died.
2 - Update your clone
3- Set up your overview and learn to use d-scan.
4 - Insure your ship unless you intend to suicide in it with concord involvement; they made this nice and confusing recently.
5 - If you intend to fight other players learn to get your pod out 1st
6 - Google anything you don't understand, Dotlan for your navigation, Battleclinic for intel and sample loadouts
7 - Be patient and use your imagination.
8 - Don't trust anyone if you can't throw a flaming bag of dogshit at their house.
9 - When you join a corp don't be a tax slave. If the corp is just a collection of people "doing their own thing" it's a zombie corp. Just quit you're better off starting your own corp with a specific focus and goals as long as you can do number 6. A corp that has a description including every activity in the game and 14 members is a good sign of terrible. Good groups ARE hard to get into. Get out there and prove you have something to offer to the groups that can offer you something while you build up knowledge and skills. Eve uni and red Vs blue are ok for the basics but past that is questionable....gate to gate ecm blob roam experience only goes so far in the case of eveuni for example.
10 - I can't wait to find you fit with "purple gear" so I can easily steal it if you are dumb.

So I've played a couple MMO's before mainly WoW. (Also SW tor and Rift) I've always read about how crazy Eve is and all that even my own father got into the game and I remember him telling me all these crazy stories. Like I said I was playing WoW so I wasn't interested.
Anyways, Eve is on sale on Steme for 7 dollars so I decided what the heck I'll try it. So I'm in the first hour or two in the game and I just cruise by a huge burning planet and my jaw drops. I immediately turn to my gf who's playing my Diablo account while I play Eve and have to show her. It looks gorgeous!
So I keep playing and playing slowly learning things about the game. How to do this or that and I do my first probe scan thing. When I finally got it down it felt awesome! I first looked on youtube then got some help from the incredible community.Which as you can tell WoW doesn't have. Anyways on to my point. Is there a safe way to play this game? I'm literally terrified now of dying. Which is weird to me since I absolutely love PvP but this game is on a whole new level. So guys, what tips or stories do you have about when you first started playing?

Buy a frigate, put a microwarp drive, a warp scambler and some short-range weapons on it, plus whatever tank will fit after that.

head into lo-sec

Try and attack someone, ideally someone who's already flashy red

There's a 99.99% chance your ship will get blown up - if that 0.01% chance occurs, then get any loot safe into a station, and go and attack someone else. Keep going until your ship explodes.

Do this 4 or 5 more times.

By the time your 5th ship has exploded, you should be starting to learn a few things about approach, range, traversal and drones, and you'll be a lot less terrified. Send me a link in game to your 5 lossmails and I'll re-imburse them.

There is no other cure for the fear.

"Just remember later that I warned against any change to jump ranges or fatigue. You earned whats coming."
