425mm autocannon DPS question

Hi all, so my Hurricane was just annihilated by another hurri (which is fine) but I noticed in the log that while I was doing about 100 damage with each hit from my 425mm the other guy was doing over 1000 with his.

Admittedly he was using the T2 version and likely faction ammo but what skills should I be focusing on that will eventually give me a tenfold damage increase? Even if my resists were zero I don't understand that amount of damage from a 425mm so I'm missing something...

My toon is only about 3m SP so a long way to go obviously.

Autocannons really need t2. He was probably using barrage ammo (a long range t2 ammo) which could easily make your damage 10x higher at longer ranges.

You are probably looking at volley damage not DPS. Stacked weapons and hits on your resist hole will have this effect.

All V - 425 with regular emp give 986 volley - 1266 with hail according to pyfa.

If you factor in implants it goes even higher.

His resists vs your damage. And then your resists vs his ammo/damage.
Skills.
Fitting.
T2 guns.
Faction ammo.
Experience.

Not sure if you were armor or shield tanked, but ammo makes a huge difference depending.

The good news is: You can get your ship to do the exact same thing someday :)

[Edit Here]

I looked you up in Battleclinic and I assume this is the guy you were refering to. This is a Cane he lost some time ago, but assume he fits similar fits regularly. I already thought he might have been using Phased Plasma, and his all damage fit p much tells the story.

http://eve.battleclinic.com/killboard/killmail.php?id=14860941

Notice he has over 2000 kills and less than 200 losses. Don't feel bad losing to a guy of this caliber.

PS: Suggestions,

Rig your ships, the extra HP is worth the cost imo.
Don't fit nano's on armor tanks, the concept is understandable, but the reality is, it wont really help you. The slot is better used with other fittings. Same with the cap mod in the mid-slot.

Hope I helped a bit. GL.

Thanks for the replies everyone. KaraflasXAM, volley damage would certainly explain it (should have thought of that...) Still high but good on him.

RavenPaine, thanks for the fit advice. Yes, that was the guy and I certainly don't feel bad about it! I joined RvB to get exactly this sort of experience. I've been wandering low and wormholes but wanted some more PvP. Can't complain that I didn't get it - lost a few rifters and my hurri yesterday alone!

TBH, a 3mil SP cane is no where near maxed out and it's going to show.
You have what? BC 3, maybe 4, and meta guns with T1 ammo? gunnery support at 3-4?

If he's a semi decent PVPer, he's going to have BC5 with T2 guns, faction ammo and all gunnery support at 5 and probably a full head of +3% or higher gunnery implants.
He would probably also have been overheating.
It all adds up to a MUCH more effective cane.

Don't worry about it tho, raw skills are just a matter of time.
Keep practicing and by the time you have the raw skills up to speed you'll have the piloting skills to match.

EDIT: i went and looked up the loss, would recommend you check some of battleclinic's top rated cane fits to see where you should be aiming.

There is no Bob.

You must have t2 guns on cane for sure. Plus max out your shield skills if your are shield tanking.
Overheating is a must too. Get all those skills up to max possilbe first fit out a frig , then cruiser, then BC.
Pump it all into evemon and remap to shorten time. Then use +2 or +3 implants on pvp toon, then keep a clone with +4 or +5 implants. Only get the implants that help your current skill trains etc. Then learn your ammo & mod ranges. Sometimes guys use long range ammo in brawl etc. Evertime you die figure out why. Were you at wrong range for your ammo etc. Sometimes you just plain eff up and die! Try to use your approach, keep at distance and orbit for target. Good Luck
