Why when I hit view market details am I only get offered a buy from a station 7 jumps away when there is one 1 jump away paying twice as much.

When you set up your buy orders, you can specify the maximum range you are willing to buy things at.

A couple of possible reasons I can think of:

a) The closer station is in a different market region. Taking advantage of price differences between regions (arbitrage) is a common way to make isk, as an alternative (or in addition) to station trading.

b) The closer station is in low-sec, and is being filtered out. You can set market filters to show orders in high-sec, low-sec, null-sec or all three. Moving stock from high to low sec can also be profitable, though this involves greater risk.

Probably:
That buy order 7 jumps away has buy range of 7 jumps or more, so you can sell to it.
Other buy order 1 jump away has buy range of below 1 jump (either Station or Solarsystem) so you can't sell to it.

If that is the case, then first order will be shown in green and second not green in Market Details. (green means that you are within buy range of that order and can sell to it.)

In any case if you move your item to the station 1 jump away where that better buy order is, you can then sell to it.

In those situations the orders won't show at all. In case (a) because you can't see outside the region you're in and in case (b), obviously, because it's filtered out.

That's true. I assumed the OP had noticed the price of an item in a station, then made a jump, and was wondering why he could no longer see it.
