Interesting. I got a phishing attempt from the poor dudes at "Sisi-support", y'know, the ones who can't afford a ccpgames.com adress and use a yahoo.com instead... Roll

PS: fowarded mail to security, for some silly reason it has been recevied along with an apparently legit support mail from a eveonline.com adress.

It all smells very fishy...

I know exactly what ur talking about, I recieved several of the "charachter transfer" mails a couple months ago, I simply erased them as I had not bought a char in the timeframe that the mails were sent, I simply erased the mail and every one I got afterwards.

It's simple people, if you haven't bought a char then you know it's a fake, simply copy and paste the mail attach it to the ticket to ccp from the actual EVE main site.

I was sent an email claiming to be part of an official CCP survey. I was not about to click a @#$% thing but it seemed to reference a "power of two" style promotional.

I only ever received a message from a fake WoW GM stating that my account would be terminated unless I logged into a website. Since I'm a carebear, there was no way that I would have done anything wrong and everyone knows Carebears are even more liked in Wow than they are in EVE.

Then again, it still had me worried to I checked out the URL, which took me to a site which looked identical to the actual Blizzard website. Since the address was different from the one I usually logged into, I figured that logging in with a fake name and a fake password would constitute little risk on my behalf and would easily reveal whether the website was genuine or not.

It was not.

No matter what I entered, it always registered as correct.

In this regard I would also like to caution player groups within EVE (such as Test Alliance), that ask players to register on websites as part of a recruitment scam to consider carefully who is given access to sensitive data, such as passwords, emails and login names as more trusting players might actually use the same registration for those websites as they do for their EVE accounts.

The general rule of thumb is you won't get an email like this from the legitimate source. They will just ban you first, then it's up to you to prove that the ban wasn't justified.

It is commonly known that "hacks" are going on for most online-games. It is also commonly known that hackers do get better at what they do.

Ofcourse such forum-topics are good, and it will help players to protect themselves - BUT: CCP could provide more safety for player accounts aswell. Accounthacks are the plaque for online-games since years, and it's a shame that CCP doesn't provide more safety options to his players.

Bottom line is: Give us more security options, like blizzards mobile authenticator. This would help prevent hacks more than any forum-message/warning/whatever could ever do.

Or you could use a 64-character password, because unlike literally every other MMO out there EVE actually supports a 64-character password.

Until a key logger gets installed without your knowledge.

I used the mobile authenticator on my phone. I never lose my phone so it's win win. If something ever did happen to my phone and it has, stolen. All I have to do is just call the company's support line and verify my account to have it removed. I still have it all set up on my WoW account even though I don't play just in case.

Not strictly true. Many ways to get Keylogged with out your knowledge. These people are ingenious in their methods, and as soon as you educate yourself with their latest methods, its likely that they will have new methods.

The only way to guarentee complete safety from harmful is to disconnect your internet connection, remove all wireless devices and never insert a CD/DVD/Bluray, USB drive or any other data storage device. However doing this would render your PC virtually useless.

Therefore the only way to reduce your risk is to employ as many layers of security as you can. CCP are behind the time wih the level of security options they offer their customers. It directly hurts CCP too. They could get a deal with real secure or better still ask one of their dev to spend time creating an authentictor. This would be much cheaper than dealing with the countless "My account got hacked issues"

Further it makes it much harder for bad guys to hack you detering more RMT.

The authenticator is very nice indeed, especially the app-version. Nowadays about 90% or more players of EVE have a smartphone, so why not use this to improve the security?

Another good security enhancement in my opinion is checking from what country/IP-address someone is trying to log-in from. If it's different compared to previous log-ins, ask the user some kind of security question. For instance let them name one of the character(s) from that specific account.

Just like "Light dat Cyno" said: The more options we have, the more secure EVE will be.

Check the message source. Emails can appear to be from a legitimate source but checking the message source will always reveal the originating email address.

The problem I see here is this. People that are stupid enough to fall for those tricks lack the common sense that is required to stumble upon this thread.

Link to this in the very much of a screwup that you call launcher.

We informed players use the exefile anyway Lol
