Generally speaking, for most people BC = yes, BS = no.

If you were one of the people for whom BS = yes, then you'd already know it and wouldn't be asking us. But BCs are cheap enough, you might as well. I'd generally say stick with T1 BCs, though, command ships are awesome but really specialized for fleet boosting.

To answer the title question:

Don't use commandships for solo pvp, it's EXTREMELY risky and they cost a metric tonn of money.

Never use tech 2 ships for learning how to pvp, the sole execption being t-2 frigates, as they normally cost around the equivilent of a bc hull, often have more dps ( ASSUALT SHIPS :D), and are faster to escape with.

Solo Mega, or any BS really, is going to be rough in the current climate. I don't see you finding much to engage. I know of people that do it, with moderate success, but considering you are still learning I'd wait.

You can definitely find some fun with a Brutix, though.

For those who say it's difficult to pvp, or even solo pvp in a BS, you've got some serious education deficiencies. For those smart enough to learn to use combat boosters or have an off-grid T3 providing links, you can take on multiple targets and tank like a GOD! Dual armor rep Hyperions, Megas, Geddons, you name it. Hell, even a Maelstrom with a Dread Gruistas booster, blue pill, and 800mm AC's can rip through a moderate sized gang.
