Hi there ISD Tipene here.

A few of my colleagues today ran what we hope to be the first of a series of seminars on subjects around New Eden. The first one has just drawn to a close and we're currently looking at putting a transcript on the wiki for future reference.

What I'm interested in is for those of you who were there, what do you think we did right and what can be improved on? This was our first stab at these so all constructive criticism will be taken on board.

As a reminder our first subject was Survival and Victory in combat, our resident expert was ISD Ioncharge, and the moderator was ISD Athechu.

Edit

Here is a log of todays session http://wiki.eveonline.com/wikiEN/index.php?title=01/10/2011_Survival_and_Victory_in_Combat

I wasn't there but I did read the log. I found it Interesting with some good information.

Seems like a good idea, sorta like an open school for new pod pilots?

I usually do a quick glance over the News Releases while logging into the game. I must have missed this first seminar being advertised. Or was this done 'Spur-of-the-moment' ?

I take it this was done in one of the high security starter systems. Was it held inside a station or out in space?

Anyway, keep up the good work.

I was under the impression it's just two ISD guys recitinga script to each other, then publishing the script for new player consumption. Is that not what it is?

In any case, this is a good summary.
There are even a few tricks I did not kow yet (the angular column in the overview and some general info).

Actually no scripting was used, this was simply Ioncharge posting from a rough framework done before hand.

This was our first run and as more of a proof of concept piece. We advertised a few minutes before hand in the rookie help and normal help channels for people to join in. In future we are looking to have an actual schedule produced in the forums of future seminars.

It was actually all done through a chat channel. We are quite limited in what we are able to do in game whilst volunteering for obvious security reasons. I would of course love to be able to have actual seminars and classes in system that people would be able to join and view the concepts we are discussing and we've have produced a few ideas about how we could do these, but there are many issues we would need to overcome with CCP before we could do this.

While you covered the effect of target speed vs damage dealt, you somehow failed to mention speed tanking as a separate valid tanking tactics.

But all in all, the new seminars is a good thing for newer pilots. I still remember the seminars organized by the State Secretariat group within Caldari militia right after FW was introduced into the game. They helped a lot back then, and hopefully these ISD seminars will be as helpful. Good job.

Well done All involved.

Now if we can just get new players to these forums, we can retain more Capsuleers.

First few months can make or break the uninitiated to New Eden, this answers a lot of questions we see everyday in the Help chat room.

Forums might also scare away new players. I been told to avoid them entirely on the grounds that going to forums is the quickest way to learn to hate a game you would otherwise love. Too much forums make me a less pleasant corp member.I think new players need to understand that general discussion does not represent the majority of eve players ... in my oppinon best way to enjoy your first few weeks is to join the right corp... not a dead corp or one where the ceo shoots you from boredom.. a corp is better than listening to players like me whine about monacles on forums.

I tried to read the log. But it broke the forum format. Scrolling right to left is a big no-no on internetz. Text-wrap ftw.

But as far as the concept goes, great idea.

Tried to reply to this using the "quick reply" but the forum software appears to have eaten it...

I attended the seminar, and overall I felt it was a job well done. The only niggle I have is that some of the information was quite technical and difficult to wrap your head around in the time frame available. This meant that I couldn't think of any questions at the time, whereas now I have a few (but no longer a seminar in which to ask them).

Hopefully this won't be a problem in future when the seminars are announced ahead of time (I suspect they will turn into more of a Q+A session then, and perhaps less of a seminar).

8/10, would read again Blink

While I think this is a good initiative, posting these chatlogs in Evelopedia is a terrible idea.
The resulting article is totally below quality standards. I doubt it will be removed as it is written by ISD gods, and so it gives a license to other people to post crappy articles as well.
You'd be much better off putting some hours into adding new articles and improving existing ones than c&p chatlogs.
It is your semi-official manual after all...

As a total new pod pilot, I found the seminar to be quite informative. Much of it was well beyond my current needs, but useful none the less.

Being a somewhat spontaneous seminar, you left us, the attendees, in the dark about what to expect. It took several of us time to realize we were supposed to be two chat channels and how the seminar was going to be run. As you go forward, posting a brief outline of what will be discussed along with the announcement will help the people decide whether to attend, and if they do attend, when to pose any questions they may have. It will also give us, especially the new players, time to read what may be currently available if we so chose, to become better informed to ask questions.

While this seminar was focused more on PvP aspects of Survival and Victory, there should have been some tie in with PvE S&V in solo or duo combat with AI controlled opponents. That would allow new players to more readily employ some of the information given and not be at a total loss when they join a corp and participate in their first fleet action.

Overall, a great idea and I'm looking forward to more of these in the future.

I honestly didnt know about this untill the news came up on the login screen, was this announced somewhere at all or just a spur of the moment thing?

Also i belive this to be an excelent idea and has great potential if this was a regular occourance, i would like to suggest a bit more in the way of advertisment for next time.

Keep in mind that I am not a member of the group of ISD that deal with the wiki. With that in mind I have taken your feedback on board and the page has been updated to hopefully look a little better. If you have any suggestions or idea about how I can improve it feel free to mail me or post here. Also it was a last minute addition based on some feedback we had in the channel.

Sorry about that. Yes this was put together at the last minute to prove we can do it. Future ones will be advertised further in advance and have a better introduction.

Yes a last minute thing, but watch this space we should be announcing the next one shortly.

Also a general page for ISD Seminars is now on the wiki with some of our future ideas http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/ISD_Seminars
