...tail lights go red (yes rifter has those), but what will the guy behind me actually see ?

Lol

To give the "correct" answer.....

You are both traveling together in the same inertial reference at the same speed, (which must be somewhat less than c since your rifter has significant mass and not enough energy to actually reach the speed of light) - At this point there is no frequency shift, and no apparent difference in speed between him and you.

You "hit the brakes" - which more accurately you can't actually do, instead you accelerate sharply towards the idiot behind you..

Since you are approaching the observer, you are "blue shifted" to him. Your red lights appear orange

If your rifter is made entirely of neutrinos then I'm not going to speculate whether his head enters uranus or uranus enters his head as the rules of relativity have been violated. (much like uranus)

Edit : And its Red -> Orange -> Yellow -> Green -> Blue -> Indigo -> Violet

If you're in your rifter flying with the speed of light…

…you're moving very slowly, and the guys behind you will already be screaming past you and not notice your silly brake light.

Incorrect. How could he see it AFTER his head goes through it? Surely i would be BEFORE his head goes through it.

Question for the nerds

Assuming the hightway code works on a linier scale. What is the safe braking distance at light speed?

We're talking exceeding speed of light here ...

considering we have faster-than-light travel AND faster-than-light sensors, red light stays red.

o/ Juddas

You mean the 3 second rule, where the minimum safe distance between you and the person in front/behind you is 3 seonds apart?

Assuming that you're traveling at he speed of light (299,792,458 m/s), you would need to be 899,377,374 meters (899,377 km) away to be in safe breaking distance. Big smile

Not quite that fast sensors. Next time you warp your ship, observe how the colors turn reddish in the back and blueish in the front.

actually, i was referring to on-board scanner. getting information from 14 AU away within seconds is effectively FTL.

…anyway, don't make me post the standard relativistic effects video again. The guy behind you sees what he always sees: more or less a single point of high-intensity, high-frequency light.

Your tail lights don't go red because of relativistic effects. Your tail lights go red because the Rifter doesn't have enough power to run both tail lights and brakes at the same time.
