Really,
I'm totally serious about this, because it does not seem so!

The new Inventory UI hurtz my head already... so much fail in one window -_-
Looks like it was put together with ductape and chewing gum.

For the really ******** ones, wikipedia offers a quite kiss guidline:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gestalt_psychology

For the beginning let's just keep it simple with symmetry (i'd have posted images directly but this forum seems neither to support imaged tags nor own images...cool stuff in 2012)

window/dialog borders area cool thing, but one should not overdo it. 3 different borders?

similar to margins:
http://i49.tinypic.com/jt99gj.png

same goes for dialog content, one inset (right) the other one flat (left), doesnt it hurt your eyes already?
http://i46.tinypic.com/143dypy.png

Now lets come to some more interesting point, the Law of Continuity wich is actually the worst part on this whole new dialog thingie and makes it look misformatted and stuck together from a bunch of squares that have no flow into eachother:
http://i49.tinypic.com/2hz3dy9.png
left optionbox is set below right content's bottom border which makes the window look like one table is set lower than the other one (the squares thingie i was reffering to). put it up and you have your thought line in place again, thus create more visual flow int the dialog.

#2 the slider:

cool edgy thing you have in there, is it so hard to draw a straight line?

So now let me do a bit mspaint, and voila, old vs new with all fixes:
http://i48.tinypic.com/2n0o329.png

could have done bit better on the left border as the checkboxes and stuff are bit close to it now, but hey it was just paint and you should get the idea wht i was speaking about.

Design patterns can be so easy... with a bit of common sense... consider this on your next dialogs ;)

The new inventory system is a vast improvement. People just always complain when things change, once they get used to it theyll realize its much better.

Great thought anyway to match this with Gestalt.

...this inventory is fine. It took me roughly three seconds to adjust to it. I don't see what everyone i flipping a **** about.

"...most gestalt psychologists emphasize that gestalt therapy is not a form of gestalt psychology."
I especially liked this part.

What the hubub is about is, some people organize differently than others. The "old" inventory system lent itself well to recognizing forms. The new one tends to rely on recognizing names (though not entirely.) Some people found the old system refreshingly comfortable, (and surprisingly, too) as they were "always" saddled with the latter method. Now it seems one of the few places they could enjoy their method of organizing has adopted their least favorite. If you take the total original posts complaining you'll get a decent demographic of the various cognitive methods. You can't please them both.

Paradise is like where you are right now, only much, much better.

The paint alterd version look more cleaner, much more smooth, just because of a few changes.

Interesting read, and those changes do make the inventory system slightly more pleasant to look at/

Fantastic post, And I am impressed to were able to articulate something I inherently sensed but was unable to verbalize, beyond " that looks sloppy and unfinished, and does my head in"

The photoshopped one looks better, but wastes the space beneath the menus. One thing we do not need in our UI for Eve is wasted space.

Other than that, nice tips.

No, it´s the useless item and isk counter that are a gigantic waste of space.
The OP´s shop just makes this whole broken thing look actually half decent.
