I've been playing eve for a few months now and I've thought to myself "i need an alt"

I'm planning to make an alt to help me with my ratting (money-making) however i don't know if i should just make my alt another drake boat or if i should train it for a full supportive char as that's all i would really need from it....

So my question to you is, whats the best way for me to help myself rat/anoms in null sec with an alt

The general rule for alts is that if you don't know what to do with one, then you don't "need" one.

Remember that your alt will take an additional monthly fee/PLEX and probably wont provide ideal benefits for at least a month, maybe more depending on what you want it to do.

This,

If you don't know what you want to do precisely with your alt, you don't need it. Getting an alt, just so you have an alt doesn't make stuff much easier at all times.

It cost you extra money, so you really only want an alt if you know what you will be using it for and if that purpose means it can either fund himself more or less or it means that you can do stuff more effectively or opens up more options.

I run multiple accounts, but played for almost a year before opening my 2nd account. Now run 4 accounts, all of them are ran with a purpose that benefits my game in general.

If you don't know what to do with an alt, you don't need an alt. Alts are for specific purposes; Orca alts, refining alts, salvaging alts. Many Titans are flown by an alt created specifically for that purpose.

Getting an alt without knowing what to do with it will do nothing but handicap your main due to him having half of the previous attention he was getting and also make you pay the extra $15 per month. An aimless alt is simply a pointless waste of time and money.

Just wondering, what made you think you needed an alt if you have no idea what to do with it?

A friend of mine suggested that I should eventually aim to end up with a combat, scout and industry character on each account for maximum flexibility. Right now I have one combat toon, two miners and one scout. This means I can:

- Scout for my industrial when I need to move things through nullsec
- Rat with one character while the other mines
- Mine with two characters while I'm chatting / reading
- Rat with one character in a wormhole while another salvages

My friend uses his second account to clear sanctums solo; one ship is big shield buffer big DPS, the other is big tank, puny guns, crazy cap recharge and carries a remote shield booster to keep the DPS ship alive. Haven't tried that myself though.

Im finally able to support my main character with PLEX's and i figured i mayswell spend the $15 a month on an alt. My logic is, ill need an alt eventually...why not start now and train it up?

Also, i'm basically thinking i want to use my alt as either support/dps while i do anoms....and occasionally do some mining...

I currently fly a drake for my anoms however, if i used an alt to support/dps me what would i train for?

Thanks in advanced

My shadow alt follows me everywhere. His only job is to assist me. He has 4m less SP than I do.

In approximate order, he trained:

* Bestower (hauler)
* Coercer (salvager)
* Hurricane (exploration = salvaging 5, hacking 5, and archeology 5)
* Orca (hauling, hisec mining booster)
* Hulk (there is little training difference between a Hulk and an Orca)
* Mackinaw (2 Mackinaws > 1 Mackinaw + Orca because of long ice harvester times)
* Trade
* Charon (freighter)
* Crane (Blockade Runner = BR)
* Bustard (Deep Space Transport = DST)
* Rorqual (hauling, ore compression, mining booster)
* Noctis (salvaging, didn't exist earlier)
* Rhea (jump freighter)
* Rattlesnake (he only has drones skills)
* Chimera (BS 5 for Rattlesnake)
* Thanatos (BS 5 for Rattlesnake next on list)

He started down the path to an Amarr Harbinger (hence the Coercer) for salvaging, until I realized the Hurricane was superior for that (larger cargohold and faster). This was pre-Noctis existing too. I still use a Hurricane for exploration, as it has a decent amount of mid-slots compared to the Noctis.

He also does research, manufacturing, and PI.

Then there are my other alts: I have 7 accounts. Research alts, mining alts, manufacturing alts, PvP alts, cyno alts, etc.

I presume any of those BS are good enough to assist my drake?

A drone boat is easier for alts, since you can instruct the alts drones' to assist with whatever target you are shooting at. You don't have to micro-manage two accounts with targeting, etc.

Hence the Dominix is popular for alts. I went with a passive shield tanked Rattlesnake, also a drone boat, but has a much bigger tank. The Dominix requires Gallente Battleship. The Rattlesnake requires both Gallente and Caldari battleship.

I've decided to go for the Dominix firstly, then a rattlesnake and finally a carrier later on to help myself

cheers guys
