I was recently flying through Eve and a notion suddenly occurred to me.

None of the planets and moons in Eve actually rotate, or even orbit their parent star.

So how difficult would it be to implement planetary axis rotation, and planetary orbital patterns?

It would be insane. Having the server calculate the movement of our ships relative to the planets and moons, along with every station in the game...

The hamsters would not be pleased.

Ok drop the orbital patterns, but still a bit of planetary rotation at least would be nice. Especially if you could witness sunrise at the planets Le grange point

I like that idea.
Although it's to difficult to implement, i think...

in 2007 i've thought it's a sci-fi simulator, not an "e-sports" game. I'm not a teenager, how would i like it much?

The physical calculations are not a problem. In fact, it's a very small percentage of the total EVE CPU usage.

The real problem is the real-time modifications of warp point and bookmarks. Also, the trajectory of your ship: would be relative to WHAT? The station, the planet, the solar system...? You would have a lot of things to keep in mind when flying.
Try any space simulator: Approching a space station in low orbit is a nightmare.

It could be a cool game though, but i don't see it implemented in EvE.
For now.
Who know, in ten, twenty years...?

EDIT: This being said, graphical effects of the planet rotating would be very cool, and relatively simple to do.
But with dust incoming, it could cause some problems. (As you must have a geostationary orbit with your target to aim).

Don't feed the trolls.

Since you're sitting at a fixed point in space, a rotating planet would not allow you to watch the sunset anymore then a still standing one unless it's in orbit.

Unless a planet's rotating really fast you're not going to notice unless you're sitting still above it for hours at a time.
There's really no compelling reason to have it in the game.

Enjoying the rain today? ;)
