Exploration-Doing it wrong?

Im trying to do Exploration but im solo. Im running into a wide variety of issues that i cant seem to avoid. Gate camps, lack of space to find profession sites, gate camps, choosing a ship, and gate camps.

Should i be able to fly around at my will? Is it normal to be restrained to only 4-5 systems? (Im in null) Or should i be able to go where i please?

I tried Proteus and got gate camped (lost several ships this way) and im currently in a legion. Am i gana need a buddy? nee dot carry around 2-3 ships (i see this as counter-productive since exploration is like backpacking.)

Am i doing it wrong? Trying something not possible? Looking over soothing?

If you understand what im asking please help , If not mention what im lacking in my question..

1. Using an alt in a covops frig ( for scouting and scanning ) is a good idea to make it safer and more effective
2. Do you know about MWD + cloak trick?
3. If you are using Proteus ( or any T3 for that matter ) you should be nearly 100% safe on null sec gates ( IN + MWD Cloak )
4. If using T3 - try using Covert + IN subsystems when scanning and then switch to combat fit to do those sites
5. Null sites can be quite hard for soloing.
- Tengu is a great choice as it can do most nullsec sites ( at least in Guristas and Serpentis areas).
- Ishtar is also great for that ---> Nullsec Ishar Fun
- Proteus in Inferno will be even better than Ishtar is now ( new DDA mods ).
6. Of course you would have it a little bit easier if you did your exploration in lowsec ( sites easier than in null, no bubbles and not-so-well organized camps). Do you have some lowsec nearby? If so go there for your exploration runs.

EDIT :
Ship you fly will be determined by pirate faction you are fighting against. Ships I listed are for Guri/Serpentis areas ( haven't tried in other areas ). Can't say about Blood/Sanscha/Angel.

Proteus is already viable as the main tank in any nullsec site. Drone subsystem, passive shield tanked = winner!

Then mop up with the drones assigned to assist your alt.

Yes. Go to hisec if you want to go where you please.

I thought the prot did not have a viable configuration for drones that was as good as the ishtar.

It doesn't but in Inferno it will.
On sentries it will be a little bit better than Ishtar and on ogres it gets ~100 dps more than Ishtar.

Right now the Proteus cannot out DPS a sentry Ishtar but the Ishtar cannot passive shield tank like a Proteus can, Far from it in truth.

When the next patch comes out were going to see alot of sentry Proteus roaming around null doing sites.
