Okay.. I have 10 mil SP but I have no idea how to really fight another player..

If I'm say.. Fighting another Battlecruiser whilst in my cane, do I just right click them and orbit at the optional range for my guns?

Well ... I'm not a big PVP guy so I'll let some others comment on how to fight other players with Battle Cruisers ...

but

I would recommend not starting out with Battle Cruisers ...

Get yourself a bunch of cheap frigates and learn with these.

Red vs. Blue would be a good place to start.

You'll need to train up motion prediction and rapid firing to 5.

Sharpshooter 5 will give you good range to start shooting at with. Surgical Strike will make you damage better. also Trajectory Analysis is a needed skill.

Buy 100 Rifters, set them up cheaply and buy insurance. Now go to low sec and attack EVERYTHING and I do mean EVERYTHING, I don't care if it's a BS, Assault Frig, Cruiser, etc. Your goal is experience, not to win. The winning part will come latter when you have experience. You will learn a lot first hand on how other people fight in particular ships, what they are capable of, etc. And how you like to setup your cheap Rifter and how you like to counter them in certain situations.

Use common sense too, even though I say jump everything if you see a 20 man gang don't jump them you learn nothing.

The price of doing this is actually a lot cheaper than it sounds, after insurance you lose very little if you set them up cheaply. Nothing is stopping you from having 10-20 bought at once and modules and than sent to your station of choice where you assemble them and insure them there.

Get twenty Rifters, then go lose them all. Every last one. Contrary to what the above guy says, I advise against attacking unbeatable targets when you're first going into PvP. Pick things that you have at least a moderate chance against, like a cruiser or another frigate, if you want to learn. If you go up against ships that you have no chance against, you won't learn too much except for the fact that the explosion from your dying Rifter sometimes looks pretty.

I'd seriously recommend looking for a new player friend corp with have or are willing to train aspects of Pvp.

It does help.

Just remember the golden rule, don't pay to join and move your own stuff if you need to :)

One other tactic you might choose for fighting and learning some basic pvp is this: Pick a fairly busy high sec system (probably not amarr or jita or one of the major market hubs) and drop a can outside a busy station which says "1 v 1 frigates."

Sooner or later someone will pop your can and it will be on. Certainly there will be people who cheat. They will bring a remote repper or whatever and will win by whatever method. You will also get some honest fights. It will not happen instantly. Some folks in innappopriate ship types will pop your can hoping to get you to agro them. Some folks will pop the can and then dock up once you shoot and undock in something more likely to win. In any event the ball is in your court. If some jerk does something like that you can just not agress. The remote repper dudes will get a few of your frigates. You will get some experience in low risk combat in which you can not be podded. Make sure that you honor the 1 v 1 yourself. Failure to do so will likely result in no repeat business.

Some other basic tips:

1. Make sure you have a scram or disruptor fitted. Folks will warp off to save their ships if you do not and it will be your own fault if you do not get a kill because of it.

2. I personally would not agree to 1 v 1 just to armor or to hull or whatever. Its a frigate. Losing it will not break anyones wallet.

3. It pays to set the other party's corp to red and see how many of his friends are in local. This is especially true if you are popping THEIR can. You will be shootable by all of his corp members if you pop their can. And vice versa. Having these little 1 v 1s in a system where your corp hangs out will also likely get less action as you can expect the other party will do the same research.

4. I certainly have no problems with roaming low sec or null sec in frigates but for a frigate your action is kind of limited in low sec. Any agression by you on a gate or a station will result in the guns of that station or gate frying you. This limits combat to -10 pirates who are always shootable or to people already illegally agressed or to people you catch in a belt or anom or complex. This severely limits your targets for a solo pvper in a frig.

Actually you be surprised there are a LOT of fail fit ships out here including T2 frigs/cruiser/etc and battleships. I used an old alt back when we started with 800k sp and trained it for less than half a day to use ewar and stood toe to toe quite a few battleships. They couldn't kill me and I couldn't kill them. What usually ended up happening is I try to ransom them or they eventually get backup in 10-20min into the fight to kill my single Rifter.

Now a properly fitted BS should be able to kill a single frigate without too much difficulty, but learning how to tackle either and stay alive for as long as possible is quite handy to know.
