Smash & Grab: Potential for major Caldari faction standings loss

Until this weekend I was under the (false) impression that the pirate arcs don't messup your hisec faction standings much. Certainly Angel Sound doesn't do you too much damage, and my previous runs at Smash & Grab were not too traumatic.

This time, however, I approached Smash & Grab a little differently ... killing most everything I met (all in the interest of research of course) ... and my Caldari Faction standings took almost as big a dive as my guristas rose. I lost just over 30% of my Caldari faction standings.

I'm still working my way thru my standings logs to sort out exactly what did the damage, but it seems the moral of the story is: If you want to minimise your Caldari faction losses then only kill what you absolutely have to. That way you will only lose a number of part-percents and a couple of 2.4%s, not the numerous -2.4%s that I suffered.

The upside, or payback, for this standings loss is a bundle of Caldari Navy Insignia (dogtags) worth an extra 100-200M isk. I think I'd prefer to keep the standings though.

I guess I am almost a 'vet' by now. Hopefully not too bitter and managing to help more than I hinder. I build and sell many things, including large collections of bookmarks.

Ouch, not good at all.

My understanding from general information is you may get a few negative standing hits while doing those Arcs but to get -30% seems rather excessive.

I think the 2.4% hits will turn out to be standings hits for shooting specific mission rats and/or structures. For example, many of the traditional missions that make you kill a pirate transport will give you a standings hit to the pirate faction for just that transport. I've also seen variations where 1 or 2 different ships in a mission might give you a hit. Sometimes they're just one of the ships in the mission, not anything special. I've also seen penalties for shooting structures that belong to factions. I can't recall which ones or which missions exactly, but there are many including one where you have to shoot a prison.

They used to be 0.0%. Somewhere along the line, CCP decided they shouldn't be free kills. Instead of filling in values individually, some genius decided it would be easier to just group all those misc frigs/fighters/turrets/structures together and slap on a giant disproportional 2.4%. From that point on, empire carebears avoided faction kill missions like the plague, and tag prices went through the roof.

Yes, the small (less than 1%) faction standings losses all seem to be designated mission ships ... ones you have to kill.

The larger losses (2.4%) are either:
- missile batteries and point defence batteries;
- stasis towers;
- non-essential ship kills of 'certain' ships. Not all ships, but it looks like either the highest value non-essential kill or some other ship.
- Some 'essential' ships ... but they're mostly small losses;
- Some objects. In one mission you need to destroy a fuel canister to complete, but there are three such canisters in the site. It looks like I lost no Caldari faction standings for killing the first one, but took major hits for killing the others (that I didn't have to) along with all their guard ships (again which I didn't have to).

I'm not terribly fussed about it, I was mainly gathering data for my 'Smash and Grab' guide, but given the magnitude of the potential loss I did think it worthwhile warning others.

I guess I am almost a 'vet' by now. Hopefully not too bitter and managing to help more than I hinder. I build and sell many things, including large collections of bookmarks.
