Look up "world" in the dictionary. It's not all about planets.

The dictionary definition of "apple" can mean a tree. An "apple pie" is not a pie made from a tree.

Google the phrase "world map" and look at the images.

... because when I google something, anything, regardless of context, I learn the truth and must not think further about the results.

Thank you, this will save me a lot of time in the future.

Simple, because the name Galaxy is the registered trade mark of a chockolate bar Big smile.

"You wait - time passes, Thorin sits down and starts singing about gold." from The Hobbit on ZX Spectrum 1982.

Just "Map" is fine with me.

No need to get all fancy with other descriptors like world, galaxy, overview or star.

We should be making EVE simple to play more often, right? At least 99.999% of the QQ threads on GD are focused on that concept.

Because when you Google the phrase "world map" you will see what people mean when they use the phrase "world map".

In a science fiction context this could mean another planet, but it certainly doesn't mean "map of the universe", "map of a specified part of the earth" or "map of a large amount".

Not introducing ambiguous dictionary definitions into clearly understood language may save you time in future, or did you mean "save" in the sense of "to deliver from the consequences of sin", "time" in the sense of "a period of enforced duty" and future in the sense of "a speculative commodity purchase"? Because that would just be a garbled mishmash of words.

Perhaps not the two latter, but it could certainly mean a map of the universe if this is the scale of the world you live in within that context.

Back when you could reasonably travel from one end to another in a boat in a few weeks, the world stretched from Gibraltar to the middle east, and a map of the world would show this area. Today, you can travel around the globe in a day or two, and a map of the world will show this area. In a world where you can travel from one end of the star cluster to the other in a matter of hours, a map of that world will probably show the entire star cluster. And yes, should the standard thing to cross on a longer voyage be the universe, a map of the world would probable show all of it (and have a very good zoom function).

Wow this thread is a lot of ******** drivel. Among MMOs it is common to refer to the environment created inside the game as a 'world'. So the world map refers to the world of eve, aka the environment created inside of eve. Theyre using a bit of outside-the-game industry lingo, get over it.

You make a good case, Tippia, point taken.

Although I think the Goon probably hit the nail on the head.

Well the word 'world' can also be defined as the whole of everything in existence. Since everything that exists in EVE is what you see on the 'world map', it makes sense that the map of New Eden is called the 'world map'.

Not sure i agree, although I understand your thinking.

So to me

A world is a single planet so to speak or a single entity such as a moon, a map of the world is everything on that entity
A solar system consists of many worlds
A galaxy consists of many stars, that potentialy have solar systems that potentially have worlds
A universe consists of many galaxies

now eve doesnt have any galaxies, but consists of many stars therefore eve must be a galaxy - so it should be called the map of the galaxy

I wasn't trying to sound pretentious or anything I just thought with the whole 'universe' theme, I just think it would fit more it were we called star map, cluster grid, New Eden topography or something like that.
