Shame when those lessons are public and really quite graphic. However, somebody styling himself as a deranged credit card shouldn't be taken lightly at all.

Never pay a ransom, ever. Not only does it mark you as a griefer target down the road, this is EVE Online and "one's word" is as rare as a 1K ISK Orca.

Python Cartel always honored ransoms, the corp is dead now but the point is we always honored ransoms. That one time when I accidentally a pod with a drake was ok because they were about to discuss ransom but no isk had been transferred Bear

Really is horrible accidentally firing a full volley and being far enough away where you can see the missiles flying really slowly at the stationary pod that's scrammed Shocked

I'd honour ransoms, if people actually payed ransoms these days.

The only time someone has even tried to ransom me was after they blew my ship up. They must not be making pirates like they used to.

Contracting the corpse back to the owner is pretty legit. Some people hate the idea that someone else has their precious biomass. I think they are nifty collectables.

Crazed causing havoc as per usual.

Without operations like mine it would be impossible for certain Alliances to conduct a respectable war. There are three basic types of arms deal: white, being legal, black, being illegal, and my personal favorite, gray.

Ransoms depend on trust.
If I trusted a person enough not to blow up my ship after I paid a ransom...they wouldn't be the type of person who'd be holding a gun to my ship in the first place. Bit of a catch 22.

I'm not saying there aren't pirates who will honor ransoms, but those being held hostage have no legitimate way to verify who is whom.

In the cat-and-mouse game that is low sec, there is no shame in learning to be a better mouse.

Always contract the corpse back...just never promise that it wont be slightly used and sticky first, because that would be lying and dishonorable.

Plently of pirates and pirate corp honor 1v1's and ransoms, or pay back if they do accidently continue violence on your ship. The Black Rabbits are one i know for a fact do. Problem is most of the stuff posted on forums is about people that dont honor so that makes people think all people do that, which is why its really not worth offering one anymore just wasting time before you have to blow them up.

It's not been nice, but thanks for using lube

I'd hold a gun on your ship and honor the ransom if that was my business. Bad business offering ransom and not honoring it. If I can make 220 million off you without wasting ammo, isn't that better than you not giving me ISK and I have to salvage and loot your ship if I want to profit? That may or may not be worth it.

Or you could take my 220 million....and then shoot up my ship and take the loot/salvage on top of it to maximize your profit.

This isn't like a normal business where screwing over your customers can be bad in the long run and it is ultimately more profitable to deal with them fairly so they'll keep coming back to you. You are in the business of screwing people over.

Even if you honor the ransom and are polite about the whole affair, nobody is going to willingly repeat the exchange. (Unless they're dumb and get caught again).

I hold no grudges against pirates. I trade, you guys ransom. We each do what we find is fun. I'm just explaining the mindset of an industrialist who might be trying to decide on paying that ransom or not, and what is going through their mind.

A smart industrialist would mount a gun on their hauler and, when pinned down for ransom, eject their cargo and hold their own jetcan ransom in exchange for being allowed to escape with their ship. An even smarter one would eject just 1 trit and say it was their whole cargo. Now who has to trust whom?

It takes a pretty special sociopath to clean up a ship after it's owner pays a ransom.
