Always wondered about something.

Say you align to a POS or a gate or whatever, if you sit in space long enough your ship changes its alignment,

Why ?

All ships are ADHD equipped, its a standard feature.

So close...

Because its a submarine and there is a current in space.

Perhaps what you should ask is how comes when you attack another ship you are always on exactly the same axis

For some reason ships think that they should settle down to the plane of the solar system they are in, so if you sit long enough it will try to level itself out. Not that it makes sense in space.

Ever try to fly straight up or down from the plane?

I have to point out just because even people who have played this game for 5 years still are not aware that passive alignment does nothing. Your ships are modelled as vectors in EVE so if you are not moving you have no direction. You will enter warp to an object directly behind you as fast as you will to one in front of you if you start at 0m/s.

The only thing passive align does is give people a clue to where you will be going.

Just pretend the super pretty star gravity pulls your ship into an alignment. Do not ask how or why or say that it is not real. It is real, you have just observed it.

I would agree with you that this is definitely the case when you jump into a system.
However once in a system your ship direction does appear to come into play.
Time to dig out the freighter.

Still doesn't answer the question about why the ship wants to reposition itself though.

Eventually your ship will fail a saving throw. This is a bad thing as it turned from Lawful Stupid to Chaotic Lost. This is even more severe with Minmatar ships as they are the rust monsters of Eve and get a penalty of -1 to saving throw against a change of alignment since duct tape causes the ships to flex.

Greetings capsuleer,

Because as with all things in New Eden they have a tendency to flow towards Chaotic Evil.

You can try it with a freighter or you can just read the wiki. Both will give you the same result. At no point does direction affect warp time.

Align in server terms means moving towards a warpable object. When you are stationary, you are by server definition not aligned to anything, and so your ship aligns itself (the outside of EVE definition for align) to the universal x/y plain (this last bit is a guess, it might just be a randomish visual direction).

Also direction has zero effect on warp time unless you are moving. This is because unless you are moving, you have no direction (to the server). You are a ball. No front, no back.

Once moving, then it matters because of agility.
