I'm quite a new player so forgive me if this has been already asked, but it had me really stumped. I'm learning exploration and just found a cosmic signature called Blood Lookout. So I warp there, go to the first gate, clear the room, go to the second gate, start working my way through the corpii when I have to warp out because I am taking too much damage, so need to heal. I go off to the nearest Customs Office, and a few minutes later warp to the place (I've already bookmarked it beforehand) only to find...nothing. ..

No trace of anything been there before. No gate, no nothing. But the funny thing is, my wrecks are still showing up in the Dscan, but I can't see them anywhere, neither in overview, nor in space.

So while I'm stumped as to why the actual place disappeared while there were still pirates , I'm even more stumped as to how to get to the wrecks to loot and salvage them. I guess I"m just too new to figure it out on my own. Btw, when scanning a second time with probes, indeed the signature is no longer there...Yet the wrecks stil show in my Dscan to taunt me...

Can anyone enlighten a confused noob?

Exploration encounter sites such as the Blood Lookout will simply vanish if you warp out after warping to them. So you need to have a friend along with you to loot & salvage, hanging a room back from wherever you are. Alternately, be capable of running the entire encounter without warping out.

As for those wrecks, you can narrow down the direction by using the directional scanner, then you simply have to travel about 10,000km before the wrecks evaporate (about two hours).

Consider this a learning experience!

(most people will agree with you that having the site evaporate when you warp out doesn't feel quite right, but that's just the way the cookie crumbles)

Thank you, this makes sense now. Yep learning experience indeed, as I had no idea. I'm still playing solo for now (haven't joined a corp yet until I get the hang of the basics and figure out what exactly I want to do before that) so I guess I got at least the bounty prizes for them pirates (over 150,000 isk, not bad for a newbie, while my main goal is really learning how to scan with probes).

Yes I managed to narrow the wrecks down to 30 angle so now I know what to do next time, to narrow as much as possible and then just go full speed ahead.

Thanks for the help!

Not quite! If you rig a frigate to travel at 5km/s, it will take you about 2000 seconds to get back to those wrecks. That time is far better spent looking for new sites :)

As for finding friends, I highly recommend simply talking to folks in your current corp. Even though the State War Academy is full of mouth breathing jarheads, I expect you'll eventually find someone who will actually help you with your exploration efforts. Exploration can be much more fun if you do it as a team.

I'd just like to add, that sites also disappear if you stay cloaked inside them long enough after the completion trigger has been activated. The trigger varies by site and can be anything from killing a specific target, reaching the final room or activating a module on a site loot can. This doesn't matter in highsec, but it's something you might want to keep in mind when you venture out of it and have other people try to hunt you down. It means, that once you cross that point, there is no warping off or cloaking to hide from scans/probes/intruders. Your options are to either stay till the end or abandon the site.

This is false. Encounter sites are only 'completed' when some trigger is hit - sometimes it's destroying a structure, sometimes it's killing all the rats, or just one special rat at the end.

You killed completion trigger for that site, maybe the group near Solar Harvester.

Not sure if it has been mentioned to you before, but there is an ingame chat channel dedicated to exploration, which is imaginitively called, exploration

If you click on the speech bubble on any of your chat windows and in the search box type in "exploration" without the " "
Will put you into a channel with a lot of info in the MOTD, as well as helpful people to answer any and all of your exploration questions

Sorry if u already knew this

To help reduce the confusion a bit further, wrecks showing on dscan but not on your overview, might simply be someone else's missions/site/sig/complex/whatever wrecks. Dscan can be set to cover a 14AU radius, that's quite a lot and covers some systems easily. To make sure you see wrecks, select the general "All" overview setting (right-click your overview tab to have the context menu), if they still don't show on your overview, you're not in the right place or they vanished.
What can happen with exploration sites, those popping in onboard scanner or probed down, is that while you're healing somewhere else, someone might have reached the site and completed it. With multiple rooms, if you didn't bookmark one wreck in each room (when you need to use acceleration gates), you won't be able to access the wrecks and loot if the site despawned because someone else completed it, so they'll effectively appear on dscan, but out of reach.

Otherwise, I second Mara, SWA isn't the best new player corp chat, but there's some gems.
That aside, nothing prevents you from looking up people's profile when traveling, lookup their corporations, if they have a public chat, hang in there, even if you don't plan on joining them it doesn't hurt to dabble around and get to know more people.

Thank you for all this additional information, lots to digest. Didn't know about the exploration channel, thanks for it. I'm still learning to use it and discovering some new channels (like the public one for the Eve Univ,,etc). Will check it out.

Btw that's the thing, I forgot to bookmark an actual wreck before warping out, so learned my lesson right there!

On the wrecks showing up on the scan, I know that they are mine as they were the very same 6 wrecks (with the same pith-whatever names) left behind. There nothing else on the Dscan, so I kind of remembered. Every time I warped away from there, those wrecks were gone, with other things showing up again. I warped back again to the place, the 6 wrecks came back again. Usually I'm not even good remembering how many wrecks I leave behind, it just happened because there was nothing else on my Dscan before warping out. Also thanks for the tip on checking out ppl and their corporations to possibly hang out in their channel. Still a long way to go while I'm having fun, but these small things do help a lot.

If you're worried about sites despawning, you can bookmark the wrecks in each room and then can warp back to them anytime after the site has despawned. This is handy for looting missions too.
