Fuel blocks, what's the deal?

Just returned to game after over a year and I see my medium Amarr POS is now fuelled with things called Fuel Blocks. I did a little calc on the cost of these things and am wondering how they compare to when we had to mine/buy the individual components ourselves?

With the medium Amarr at 20 per hour, and at a cost of 20K each, it's going to cost me 268,000,000 to keep this baby up and running for four weeks. I've got a feeling it's a lot more expensive than it used to be.

Can anyone fill me in?

Take a look at the Amarr Fuel Block Blueprint (With 40 ME) and you'll notice that the difference in materials from before is not so big. The difference you're seeing is probably the profit margin from manufacturing fuel blocks (which you could do yourself if you feel it's worth the trouble) and a (big) price increase of isotopes and a smaller one for PI goods since POCOs.

Also note that there's no difference in fuel consumption and different cpu and power use anymore either.

EDIT: Perhaps Hulkageddon can have something to do with the current spike in isotope prices?

Maybe. Actually it isn't so bad. I just sold a load of isotopes and bought fuel blocks. I mined the isotopes so it's all good and not so expensive as I thought. Blocks were 3k cheaper in the adjoining region.

Yup, sometimes changes have a way of looking worse than they really are at first glance, don't they :).

While I've not seen the numbers run recently, Fuel blocks worked out cheaper for small and medium towers (regardless of power usage) and slightly more expensive for large towers. This was back when they were introduced.

Manufacturing your own isn't a bad idea, as it cuts out someone else's profits. Just do the math to see if it affects your ISK/H adversely.

Ammunition or component array.

Those are Jita prices. around 720,000 isk/h, or 960,000 isk/h if you're manufacturing in a POS, on a single line. With no PE research. Moderate PE research will bump that up by around a half again.

Woo! CSM XI!

Every time I see this thread title I think of Jerry Seinfeld saying it...

"Fuel blocks: what's up with THAT?!?!"

Hehehe...
