Another "I need to build a PC thread"

I need to essentialy build a another budget PC. My current one broke itself. I don't know if the motherboard is whacked, or the SATA controller(s) on the MB is now broke, but it acts funny. Read write, instead of normally 80-125 Mb/s is now - 1.4-3 Mb/s. Long disc usgae causes the system to restart, and sometimes it just won't see the drive. Its not worth the time to try to diagnose and fix it - its time to rebuild.

I only really need a MB, CPU, and ram, and WIn 7.

I have very little time to "research." So what sort of CPU and motherboard SHOULD I be looking at for a budget system. I KNOW I want an ATX form, I am tired of the little motherboards, and I have a Antec Three Hundred Case that can support one. I'd also want to have some USB 3.0. Its been three years since my current system was created as a budget system. From what I quickly gathered, the 1155 sockets from Intel are the new budget craze? My current motherboard is woefully underpowered, so I am looing to go from XP to Win 7.

I current have a 775 socket, and buying a new chip is probably easier for me to just do than taking apart, cleaning off, and resetting a cpu with thermal stuff, when I could probbaly (hopefully) get some good performance boost buying another budget chip (currently have a Pentium E5200 Wolfdale 2.5GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core)

I have this graphics card: SAPPHIRE 100265HDMI Radeon HD 4830 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card. I am doubtful it would support BF3, of which I have only a passing interest to see what a 32 vs 32 game would be like, but I have no other interest in pC games, and the card serves EVE just fine.

I would not go for budget build just now.

I am looking at the newegg. Budget ivy bridge cpu will cost you 200 USD (new family of intel cpu). Near top of the line sandy bridge cpu will cost you just a little over 200 USD (the old family of intel cpu).

I think you are better off building nice box based on sandy bridge, it is being replaced with ivy bridge, true, but you can have a kick a$$ machine instead of having a badly reserached "budget" machine. Looking at your pvervious build, you got cpu that runs at 800 MHz bus and sold for something like 90 USD new. The norm back then was 1066 MHz bus with specialty overcloak motherboards giving you ability to push it to 1333 MHz. With you focus on the "budget built", you shot yourself in the foot from the start on your old build. I think you doing it again.

Thank you for the advice. During the day I was able to get some article and some guides from anandtech. I think I am goign to go a little more higher than a real basic build.

I also thought it would be best to go with the sandybridge cpu's and the 1155 sockets which are supposed to support the next gen cpu's - but honestly, I'd expect somethign to break before I upgrade. I think my motherboard at the time was $60 and the cpu was $75 in March 2009. I have more cash on hand now though, soI am looking at a $130 sandybridge right now and a $125 z68 (the z chipset) motherboard. Whatever the sandybridge that supports hyperthreading which I think are sandybridge versions of the core i3 chips. I would not rely on the gpu for eve, I'd use my card (which can easily do two instances of eve) or just get a better one. I could probably get a better cpu, but I also need to budget for Win 7 64-bit pro, even if oem (because Murphy's Law states I will something that will require win xp compatiablity).

With that - I shoul dbe good - I should have enough ports to keep daily backup drives in the tower.

I am not hard core enough to care about the details of memory - so I would stick to a brand name.

That's where I am headed to right now. Because of sleep and work, I will miss the Newegg order time for a Saturday shipment, so the best I can do now I think is Tuesday shipping.
