Ive been looking into blueprints in order to produce some ships and I am trying to get my head around the difference between Originals and Copies. I understand what they are, but how are they acquired?

For example, looking at Drake blueprints in Jita, the ones on the market go for about 340 million ISK while ones on contract are labelled as copies and all go for under 10 million isk. Stuff I had read somewhere said that all tech 1 blueprints on the market are all BPOs that are seeded by NPCs. Is that correct? The price disparity would seem to indicate that this is true.

I know that tech 2 BPOs are limited and AFAIK the only originals are owned by players with no other way to acquire them? Either way, the most important question I had was about the tech 1 blueprints so if anyone could answer that I would be very grateful.

All blueprints on the market are Blue Print Originals (BPOs).

BPOs can be manufactured from, researched, or copied. Note, when any of those things are done, the BPO will not be able to be put back on the market again.

Blue Print Copies (BPCs) are made from BPOs. BPCs cannot be researched or copied. They only have a limited number of manufacturing runs. Once those manufacturing runs are used up, the BPC disappears.

So check those drake blueprint contracts again.
You will find some BPCs being sold at 500k isk with 1 run on them. You can only build one drake from this BPC.

You will find more BPCs at 750k isk with 1 run, but with better research levels. Do the math to determine if the minerals saved from buying the "better" BPC make up for extra cost of buying it.

You will also find some BPCs at around 2 M isk, with 5 runs on them. You can build 5 drakes from this blueprint, so you can divide the BPC cost by the runs and see that each run costs you 400k isk. Maybe this is the better buy for you?

You will also find some BPOs on contracts for ~500M, ~600M, etc. Notice the different blue color on the icon and the name "Drake Blueprint (original)". People will try to scam you into buying a BPC at the price of a BPO. Don't fall for that. The benefit of buying BPOs from contracts is that someone else has (usually) already done research on those blueprints, meaning building from them is cheaper and faster than one off the shelf. You can also build an unlimited number of drakes from this BPO without degrading the blueprint. Then you can sell the BPO later to get your money back.

BPCs must be counted in the cost of building your item.
BPOs cost quite a bit more, however they are an asset which can be re-sold later.

T2 BPOs and bpcs used to be available from research agents, but it was a crap shoot if you'd get them or not. As for the rumors, and incident occured several years ago. New regulations were placed on devs and GMs, the bpos in question were removed, etc. Players who still have the original T2 bpos can still use them, no more will be placed into the game. From now until CCP decides to start something new, invention is the way to get T2 bpcs. Hope that clears things up.
