I got into my first real pvp action this week, and I have finally decided to cast away my carebear ways. I'm wondering about my training queue though. Obviously this is a little in advance, but I am wondering whether to keep training my shield tanking and missile skills or cross train. Previously, my main mined a little and while also running level 4 missions in a tengu. I will still be spending plenty of time flying frigates and cruisers before I step up to larger and more expensive ships, but I wonder if it would be better to cross train to armor tanking and guns. I enjoy missile ships, but if guns would be much more effective in pvp, I feel that it would be worth cross training if I plan to focus on pvp.

plenty of drake action in pvp. But in general guns are better due to the instant hits, but tengu and drake are very very popular ships :)

Shield Tanking skills cannot hurt you, also missile support skills help a lot when you are flying bombers and drakes; both staples in pvp fleets. After those are to a decent level I would train gunnery, drone, and armor tanking to decent levels before deciding where to specialize. There is no substitute for being able to fit t2 med weapons, t2 tank (armor or shield), and t2 scout drones. Some corps require these as a base line.

Don't listen to the previous two posters. Guns beat the snot out of missiles in PvP. Always have, always will.

If you *really* want to get into PvP(*) there really is only one way and that's the way of the Winmatar. Get your medium projectile skills trained, get your Winmatar ships trained and sink some time in gunnery. Any other path will without exception eventually lead to frustration because you will keep getting destroyed by projectiles.

Your shield skills will help, but focus on Shield Upgrades and Shield Management because passive tanking with extenders and rigs is the way to go.

(*) PvP meaning actual ships shooting at each other as opposed to 300+ ships lagging out on a grid

Thanks for the replies so far. I enjoy missiles (especially with the upcoming graphics changes), but guns aren't so bad either. It looks like Minmatar would best use my shield and missiles skills too.

In regard to the Drake, I love the ship but there is no way I can fly it anymore. I ran l3 missions in it for quite some time, and while it is a solid ship, I just don't want to fly it anymore.

If you're willing to train armor skills, the Vengeance and Malediction make great rocket boats. You could also try the Hawk, the Crow and the Kestrel if you're interested in flying smaller ships first. Minmatar don't use that many missiles these days.

I wouldn't train into Minmatar unless you want to. Yes right now they are FOTM, but that always changes at CCP's whim. I actually chose what I fly based on looks (Amarr/Gallente), and am cross trained into the drake and t2 heavies since the Drake can do just about everything from WH's to PvP.

If you want to get into gunnery train all your support skills for it to 4 first (controlled burst, rapid firing, etc, etc), and then use the time during training to figure out what you really want to get into. That way once you jump into a gun boat even with t1/meta 4 guns you will do decent damage.

Edit: You will also want to train t2 armor and make sure your shield are t2. Nothing sucks more than not being able to go into a CTA because you can't use the correct tank.

Winmatar is where it's at. They've been FOTM for quite awhile and they're ships layouts, bonuses and fitting are what other ships wish they could be.

I'm also interested in cross training to Gallente, as I can already "fly" a domi, and with a month's worth of training time I will be able to the skills for T2 Ogres and T2 Sentries.

Everyone should crosstrain at least two races. Better yet if they tank differently. It gives you more ship/situation options, insulates you against nerfs real or perceived, and helps to make more informed posters who can look at the game from a wholistic perspective instead of some in-game racial attachment.

Lili flies Amarr and Minmatar (soon Gallente also). Armor and shield tanks. Uses guns and missiles, as well as all drones. I have other characters that fly Gallente and Caldari (which btw is a convenient cross train as both use hybrid guns).

I don't think there is a single pair of races to fly that won't make sense. Any pair will give you more perspective and options in the game. So choose any of the others and enjoy.Smile

I've fixed a 240 days skill-plan so I have a hard time separating them. Could I get a list of support skills which directly affects my DPS with turrets? I'd greatly appreciate it.
