If you recruit someone and they upgrade say the 2nd day do they still keep the trial time or is that gone right away?

nope.

if you give someone a buddy invite, and they sub they will get 30 + (remaining trial time) before having to pay again.

Max is ~51 days of gameplay.

One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia

When you upgrade, trial restrictions will be removed immediately but no time is lost, so effectively any trial time left is converted into full gametime.

To add to Malaire's correct post, and to emphasise the right answer: You will NOT lose trials days if you subscribe "early".

You should never lose game time when you upgrade or extend your sub, the game time simply adds to what you already have.

WoW holds your hand until end game, and gives you a cookie whether you win or lose. EVE not only takes your cookie, but laughs at you for bringing one in the first place...
